Harry Potter: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Seamus Finnigan

One of the more underrated characters in the Harry Potter franchise is one Seamus Finnigan. He plays a more prominent role in the books than the films, but we still often see him as a moment of comedic relief with an Irish accent during the scenes in which he does appear.

We’ve listed ten facts about Mr. Finnigan, from his time before, during and after Hogwarts, which only the truest of Potter superfans would know about.

10 He’s Half-Blood

Like many of the witches and wizards at Hogwarts, Seamus is Half-Blood. In his instance, his father was a muggle and his mother was a witch, who didn’t tell Mr. Finnigan about this until after they were married.

Understandably, this was pretty shocking to all involved.

9 He Loved Quidditch As A Child

One of the main things we have been able to find out about Seamus Finnigan is that his love for quidditch stems all the way back to his childhood.

He supports the County Derry Quidditch team (which suggests that this is his hometown) and the fact that he and his mother attended the 1994 Quidditch World Cup to support Ireland.

8 It Took A While For Him To Be Sorted

The sorting ceremony must be a pretty intense and scary time for any wizard. Half of them desperately wanting to look imposing by being sorted into Slytherin and half praying that they don’t end up there.

It’s a mystery what personality traits made the Sorting Hat take so long to make his decision because Seamus was sitting in front of the entire school for a whole minute before being declared a Gryffindor.

7 Seamus Is Who Helped Harry To Play Wizard’s Chess

In The Philosopher’s Stone, Wizard’s Chess ends up becoming quite an important part of the storyline. Without Seamus lending Harry his magical moving Wizard’s Chess pieces, he’d have never been able to get through the challenge and stop Voldemort from living on the back of Professor Quirrell’s head.

In classic JK Rowling fashion, this concept stops being relevant as soon as it stops impacting the story.

6 He Had A Strange Opinion About The Grim

Even though Sybill Trelawney isn’t exactly the best and most reliable teacher of divination in the world, she did manage to make a few accurate prophecies in her time. One of the more overlooked ones came in her first class, in which she explains that Harry has ‘The Grim’ in his teacup.

In true Seamus fashion, he exclaimed that while it looked like The Grim from a certain angle, it could be turned slightly to look like a donkey.

5 He Took Lavender Brown To The Yule Ball

We know Lavender Brown primarily from her strange, intense relationship with Ron Weasley.

She wasn’t of much importance outside of her role in The Half-Blood Prince to the main characters, but she must have been a major figure in the life of Seamus back in fourth year, as he took her to the Yule Ball.

4 Harry Had To Reject Him From The Quidditch Team

After Katie Bell’s explosive encounter with the cursed necklace, Harry had to choose who to replace her in the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Seamus had tried out for the role of chaser previously, but Harry ended up choosing Seamus’ best friend, Dean Thomas, instead.

3 He Loves Explosions

One of the most well-known things about Seamus Finnigan is his love of explosions whether it’s his time spent trying to turn water into wine and covering his face in soot, or saving Hogwarts from a set of snatchers.

Professor McGonagall might not have approved during his time in education, but eventually, she encouraged his ‘particular proclivity for pyrotechnics’.

2 His Patronus Is A Fox

Everyone in the Wizarding World has a Patronus that takes on a different form.

When the concept is first introduced in The Prisoner Of Azkaban, it seems to be a very specific spell that very few can pull off, but by the end, everyone has one and it can do all manner of things. Seamus’ takes the form of a fox.

1 He Attended The Dumbledore’s Army Reunion

In 2014, JK Rowling explained that there had been a reunion amongst the members of Dumbledore’s Army at the 2014 Quidditch World Cup.
