Star Wars Hints Ancient Sith Will Impact Disney's New Prequel Show

While the Sith are absent so far in Star Wars’ High Republic era, the history of the Ancient Sith still threaten the Jedi in the new High Republic book Into the Dark, which could set the stage for the rise of the Dark Side in The Acolyte. So far, the High Republic’s biggest conflict revolves around the Nihil marauders, but the Jedi’s encounter with the Drengir in Into the Dark brings the Sith back into play through ancient history. As the story details released reveal The Acolyte’s mystery involves “emerging dark side powers,” the Ancient Sith could be the key to the return of the Sith in the High Republic.

Claudia Gray’s novel strands traveling Jedi at an abandoned space station, where a powerful darkness lurks in the shadows, and four mysterious idols are somehow tied to it. The Jedi soon find these idols were placed on the station by the Ancient Sith in their conflict with the Drengir centuries before the Jedi discovered them. Sith artifacts seem to be a major concern during the High Republic era, as the Jedi have a protocol to release the darkness contained within them back into the Force. The Ancient Sith past still looms large for the Jedi, as even the Jedi Temple built above a Sith shrine.

The Acolyte is not directly connected to the books, as it takes place in a different time period of the High Republic era, but the new novel hints about the forces that may still be at work by the time of the upcoming show. Sith artifacts, tied to ancient darkness and conflict in centuries past, could easily play role in the rise of a new threat from the dark side. The Sith are likely still lurking in the background of the High Republic, passing down knowledge through the ages outside the reach of the Jedi, but there’s no indication of how numerous or powerful the Sith would be at the time of The Acolyte. If they are still in a weaker state, they may draw upon the old stored power put into the artifacts from before the Sith were all but wiped out.

Into the Dark’s hints of prevalent Sith artifacts, alongside The Acolyte’s tease of emerging darkness and the unknown whereabouts of the Sith, could mean that the Sith will rise again out of pieces of Sith history scattered around the galaxy. They could even rise from within the Jedi, as the Jedi are already encountering these powerful artifacts earlier in the High Republic era and do not fully understand them. However, the emerging darkness may not necessarily be the Sith. These artifacts could also be used by others on the dark side. The Sith are only one possible source of the darkness, as the Drengir of Star Wars are also a dark side power the Jedi struggle to defeat.

The High Republic still has many mysteries to unfold, and the Ancient Sith could be at the nexus of them. Their ancient Star Wars history is still threatening the Jedi centuries later, and the Jedi may yet face a greater threat from what the Sith left behind. The Acolyte will reveal whether a new darkness is emerging or an ancient darkness that has only been dormant.
