Why Mass Effect Legendary Edition's Day One Patch Is So Big

Like many AAA games, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is set to get a day-one patch when it launches, solving issues EA and BioWare had to leave on the table between going gold and the game's May 14 release date. The Mass Effect Legendary Edition update will be a big one, measured at 11.8 GB on PlayStation, though possibly less or more on PC and Xbox. There's a good reason for this size, according to the patch notes.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a remaster of the first three Mass Effect games and some, though not all, of their DLC. The focus is on graphical enhancements, bringing the game up to 2021 standards, but there are also significant feature changes, such as a universal character creator and friendlier combat systems. The first game has received the most upgrades, owing to its 2007 origins, while Mass Effect 3 has actually lost its multiplayer component. It appears the day-one patch will deal with the more granular aspects of the remasters.

The 1.01 update, discovered by Twisted Voxel, addresses not just stability and crash fixes but smoother performance. The latter may not matter much on PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X/S - depending on the severity of slowdowns - but could potentially wreck the experience for someone on PS4 or Xbox One. Those consoles are capped at 30fps in Mass Effect Legendary Edition's Favor Quality mode, so unpatched play could also result in framerate stuttering. Setting the collection to to Favor Framerate mode, which raises the cap to 60fps, could be a workaround.

Another important target of the patch appears to be graphics details. The patch notes mention "lighting improvements" that are both "visual and performance-related," suggesting Mass Effect Legendary Edition's lighting system might ship partially bugged. Other fixes are aimed at ambient occlusion, a rendering technology that enables soft shadows. Malfunctioning occlusion would have certainly hurt the games' visual realism.

Ultimately, 11.8 GB is small next to the day-one patches of games like Call of Duty, which can easily top 50 GB. But the size could still prove problematic for some Mass Effect Legendary Edition owners; not everyone has good bandwidth, and certain ISP data caps could provide more problems. Other fans may just not have time to spend an hour or two waiting for a patch, so they'll have to start the process as soon as possible if they want a chance to play the games on release day.
