The Suicide Squad Polka-Dot Man’s Face Prosthetics Revealed In BTS Images

James Gunn shares new behind-the-scenes photos for The Suicide Squad revealing the facial prosthetics for David Dastmalchian's Polka-Dot Man. Originally created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoloff and debuting in Detective Comics No. 300, the Polka-Dot Man served primarily as a minor antagonist to Batman before becoming one of his rogues gallery of villains. In the comics, Abner Krill had developed a suit with advanced technology that allows his to remove the dots from his suit and use them for a variety of means, including weapons and a flying saucer he would use as a getaway vehicle.

After making a non-speaking cameo appearance in The LEGO Batman Movie, Krill/Polka-Dot Man would make his live-action cinematic debut in The Suicide Squad with Dastmalchian portraying the character. The film would feature a new take on the character, with Krill having been exposed to an interdimensional virus as a kid alongside his siblings by their S.T.A.R. Labs scientist mother who hoped to turn them into superheroes. The result is a disease that causes him to grow multi-colored polka-dots and glowing pustules on his body over time, of which he has to expel at least twice a day or risk death, and is sent to Belle Reve Penitentiary and recruited by Amanda Waller to join Task Force X after killing his mother.

Having come from the CGI-heavy Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, one of the main points of praise amongst critics and audiences for The Suicide Squad has been the amount of practical effects utilized for the film. While Polka-Dot Man's titular ability certainly required CGI to bring to life on screen, it's a testament to Gunn, Dastmalchian and Legacy Effects' creative drives that the character's bloated face was a completely practical prosthetic, even more impressive with the colorful lights situated in the various pustules. Aside from the effect itself, Gunn's story of Dastmalchian's emotional response to donning the prosthetic in regards to his love of iconic monster actors Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff is rather moving to hear and sure to pull on the heartstrings of those who have fallen in love with the actor and the character.

When first signing on to write and later direct the film, Gunn expressed his desire to explore characters off the beaten path in the DC Comics with The Suicide Squad and Polka-Dot Man was certainly one of the most-discussed amongst fans when he was announced as part of the roster. Though part of Batman's rogues gallery, the character is largely considered a joke in the comics and is taken just as lightly as Condiment King and Kite Man. However, Gunn and Dastmalchian did the unthinkable and turned him into one of the most celebrated characters on the roster for the film and one that will bring audiences back for multiple viewings in the future.
