Skyrim And The Most Immersive Open World Games To Explore

Over 10 years have passed since the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and it is still considered one of the best open worlds to explore in a game. Better, larger, and more distinguished gaming worlds may have been released in the last 10 years, but the opportunities that are available in Skyrim's open world haven't been replicated with the same degree of success. The replayability that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers has kept old players coming back and new players coming in for the last ten years.

Although the main quest in Skyrim can't be changed too fundamentally, players have a myriad of options when it comes to their character. Whether they choose to be a warrior, a common thief, or a cursed creature, players have the power when it comes to making their character's story in Skyrim's world. With powerful lore behind the game, and a massive number of side missions and gameplay features that allows players to strive as far away from the main story as they desire, Skyrim was, for a long time, the closest thing to an escapist, reality-shattering parallel in-game life where anything was possible.

Although few games have been able to match Skyrim in terms of scale or immersion, the last 10 years have seen a focus on open-world experiences that align nicely with what Bethesda achieved. Studios have taken a different approach from Bethesda in aiming for a similar level of immersion, with Rockstar Games providing plenty of polish and minor activities for players to get engrossed in, for instance. So, from Red Dead Redemption 2's Western story to No Man's Sky's unlikely success after a bumpy launch ride, these are the best and most immersive open-world games to explore.

Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, put players in an open world set in 1899 that spanned five different fictional U.S. states: New Hanover, Ambarino, Lemoyne, New Austin, and West Elizabeth. Every mountain, settlement, and valley in Red Dead Redemption 2's vast open world was created from real locations, ensuring that the characters and settings of the game reflected the era as accurately as possible.

Rockstar's game gave players the opportunity to be whoever they wanted to be. The gameplay features and mechanics encouraged players to explore different towns and face all kinds of enemies with firearms and explosives. Aside from the main story involving Arthur Morgan and RDR's John Marston, and all the other stranger missions to explore, Red Dead Redemption 2 allows players to make a name for themselves in this world. They can train and ride their horses endlessly to travel through the different states, face bandits, hijack trains and even threaten passengers.

If Red Dead Redemption 2's 'Wild West living' simulation had a modern counterpart, it would definitely be Grand Theft Auto V. Although it was released back in 2013, GTA 5 is, like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2, one of those games which boasts an incredibly immersive open world. In GTA 5, players can choose what their character's story is to such an extent, that a roleplay mod for the PC version of the title has become immensely popular, with top streamers creating their own characters and impersonating them live to their fans.

GTA 5's open world comprises San Andreas and includes the fictional Blaine Country and the city of Los Santos. Players can make a life for their character to an almost ridiculous extent, which includes the possibility of annoying lead characters, going ghost hunting, solving a murder in a mine, dressing up as Bigfoot, and fighting a werewolf. The playable world in GTA 5 was the largest ever introduced in the Grand Theft Auto series, and while there is a main story to follow as well as side missions that unlock more content, the world in GTA 5 can be explored freely without restrictions from the very beginning of the game.

Although any of the Assassin's Creed titles would be worthy contenders in a battle for the best open-world game, Ubisoft's latest installment in the series is unparalleled. From leading epic raids against the Saxons to hunting and drinking, the Viking world of AC: Valhalla will take players on a journey through England's hills to gather loot and defeat enemies. The open worlds of the Assassin's Creed series are praised for their historical accuracy and the hours of immersive - and often overwhelming - gameplay they offer.

The much-awaited Discovery Tour: Viking Age exploration free expansion which was recently announced is only one of the many elements that push players to roam the intricately designed game world of Valhalla. The game also introduced World Events, a new gameplay mechanic that allows players to spot new, short side missions on the map that allows them to explore different regions that might be otherwise unimportant in the main story.

Amazon Game Studios' recent success with New World keeps MMORPG players coming back. The open world of Aeternum in New World is filled with all kinds of possibilities and challenges for players, and they go far beyond the game's main campaign and side missions. The different factions and game events such as raids, faction wars, and invasions mean that players often have a long list of things to do outside of missions, whether it's leveling up different trades by mining, chopping wood, or making potions, or traveling from one side of the map to the other to hunt down other players in PvP.

New World has a massive map, and it is made up of 14 different regions that become accessible to players as they level up. Every new region has new missions, NPCs, resources, enemies, and resources. Each region has a distinctly different feel, and its own city where players can buy a house in New World alongside crafting all kinds of armor, weapons, furniture, potions, and a myriad of other things. With a seemingly endless array of story, side, and faction missions to choose from, this is one of those games in which players live, developing a character at the pace they choose and in the direction they prefer. Nothing is set in stone, and there's always something new to explore, loot, or defeat.

After an overwhelmingly rocky debut, No Man's Sky is finally catching up to be the game that everyone was expecting at launch. A massive new update was introduced which gave the whole open world a graphics makeover, making the setting of the game one of the most stunning worlds to roam through.

No Man's Sky will have you floating and roaming through the unknown planets of a massive open galaxy. It allows players full freedom when it comes to exploring any part of the map to gather resources, build a settlement, and survive No Man's Sky's galaxy. With the terraforming game mechanic, players are able to shape and mold the planet to their liking, whilst slowly exploring all of the story's lore in more than 30 hours' worth of game content. It's not quite as long as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but it still provides an immersive experience.
