Both PC and Mac gamers have the ability to use a console controller such as a PS4 controller to supplement their play. Sony's Ps4 controller, the Dualshock 4, has many fans. The unique build is very comfortable and easy to control, making it an ideal pairing with PC or Mac gaming. Connecting the controller is easy enough, but the process can be a little confusing.
On both platforms you'll have the option of using either a wired connection via a micro-USB cable, or wireless through Bluetooth. For a wired connection on PC, you'll simply need to plug the controller into the PC, just like if you were charging it. If you're using Steam to play your games, that's it – you're ready to play. If you want to use the Dualshock 4 outside of Steam, you'll need either download DS4Windows, or use Bluetooth.
Bluetooth pairing can be set up in two different ways on PC. You could buy Sony's official wireless adapter, which is expensive (currently $76.90 on Amazon). There is a slightly harder but cheaper way, however. First, go to your Bluetooth settings and find "add Bluetooth or other device" and pick Bluetooth from the device list. Make sure your PS4 controller is on and put it in pairing mode by holding the PS and share buttons at the same time. The light on the top of the controller will flash when in pairing mode. After a few seconds, you should see "wireless controller" pop up on your device list. Click add, and you're ready to play.
Mac set up isn't too different, but it's a bit harder to connect via a micro-USB cable. If you would rather go the cable route rather than Bluetooth you'll have to complete a few extra steps. First, connect your controller to the Mac, and make sure it's on. Click on "About This Mac" from the Apple logo in the menu bar, then go into system report to find USB. Once you click on that, you should see the controller pop up.
A Bluetooth connection on Mac is very easy. Simply open system preferences from your Apple menu, and choose Bluetooth. Put your PS4 controller in pairing mode by holding down the PS and share buttons simultaneously until the light flashes. The controller should soon pop up in the Bluetooth window. Click on it to complete the set up. As with the PC, you can also use Sony's proprietary USB adapter. You're now free to enjoy all your PC or Mac gaming with your favorite PS4 controller.
