Penny Dreadful ran on Showtime from 2014-2016 and spanned three seasons. The highly anticipated spin-off series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, is coming soon.
While information about the new series leaked steadily since it was first announced in November 2018, more has been discovered as the show's release date approaches. As far as we can tell, the spin-off series is not directly related to the original series, which was set in the Victorian era and worked off the original term that inspired the series. The term "penny dreadful" was used to describe a certain type of fiction book that was published with more boundary-pushing subject matter during the time.
The original series explored stories that are familiar to fans of Universal's monsters and the early days of horror such as Frankenstein, Dracula, werewolves, and the like. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels seems to be a different sort of venture, but likely maintains a similar spirit. Here's everything we know so far.
Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels is slated for release on Showtime April 26, 2020. The series began filming in Los Angeles in August 2019. Paco Cabezas, who directed four episodes of the original series, as well as the series' finale, will also direct multiple episodes of the spin-off. The show runner from the original Penny Dreadful series, John Logan, is the show runner of this version as well. Producers for the spin-off include Michael Aguilar, Sam Mendes, and Pippa Harris. Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels is produced by Desert Wolf Productions and Neal Street Productions.
Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels stars Michael Gladis (Mad Men) and Lorenza Izzo (The Green Inferno). It also features Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Daniel Zovatto (It Follows, Don't Breathe), Nathan Lane (American Crime Story), Adriana Barraza (Babel), Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful), and Carrie Bishé (Halt and Catch Fire) in the main cast. Supporting cast includes Amy Madigan (Field of Dreams), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Lin Shaye (Insidious), Adam Rodriguez (CSI: Miami), Thomas Kretschmann (The Pianist), Dominic Sherwood (Vampire Academy), Ethan Peck (Star Trek: Discovery), and Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs).
Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels takes place during Hollywood's "golden era" in the 1930s. The show itself is set in Los Angeles in 1938, and has been described as a "spiritual descendant" of the original series, but focuses on a new set of characters and a different culture's deity. Unlike Penny Dreadful's focus on Victorian era monsters and myth, City of Angels puts Santa Muerte in the center as it explores Hispanic supernatural folklore. According to show runner John Logan, "Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in Penny Dreadful London storylines. We will now be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social, and racial issues." At the center of this folklore lies a grisly murder that must be investigated by Detectives Tiago Vega (Zovatto) and Louis Michener (Lane).
