Spinning Out's Jonathan Van Ness Cameo Explained | Screen Rant

In Netflix's figure skating drama Spinning Out, Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye makes a hilarious cameo in the third episode. Spinning Out stars Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker, a promising figure skater whose competition dreams come to a screeching halt after a devastating fall derails her career. Kat receives a second chance when she gets an opportunity to become a pair skater with Justin Davis (Evan Roderick), which suddenly puts her dreams of making the Olympics back in play.

Created by Samantha Stratton, the 10-episode series is about mental illness as much as it is about figure skating. Kat and her mother, Carol (January Jones), both suffer from bipolar disorder and the series depicts how the illness can destroy their lives, both physically and mentally. Spinning Out features a cast that includes Willow Shields, David James Elliott, Sarah Wright Olsen, Will Kemp, and Johnny Weir. However, there is one special cameo that occurs early on in the series. That cameo belongs to Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness.

In Spinning Out episode 3, Van Ness shows up at the Pinecrest Skating Rink in an electric fashion. Van Ness, who graced the January 2020 cover of Cosmopolitan UK, plays Bruce, an expensive skating choreographer from Michigan who Leah (Kaitlyn Leeb) hires to help out her and her partner, Gabe (Weir). Leah and Gabe are rivals with Kat and Justin so Bruce is supposed to be the asset that pushes them to the top. Once Bruce enters the rink, it's clear the coach is more interested in cracking jokes than choreographing a routine.

During the scene, Bruce sternly skates around Leah and Gabe, joking that they must skate to the music of Coldplay, much to the dismay of Gabe. Bruce challenges the pair to channel their energy into the routine and says, "Get to it girls," before hilariously skating away. Van Ness had been teasing the role on his Instagram page for almost a year, posting clips of his figure skating training.

Van Ness' witty presence in Gay of Thrones and Spinning Out showcases why he's such a pop culture icon. Although the cameo is short, Van Ness transforms Bruce into an unforgettable, larger-than-life character. Unfortunately, this brief encounter is Van Ness' only appearance on Spinning Out. For a show that tackles serious topics such as mental illness, Van Ness' role provides a much-needed comedic presence to the series. If Spinning Out returns for a second season, perhaps Van Ness can reprise his role to entertain fans once again by demonstrating his finished routine to Coldplay's music.
