The Star Wars franchise has come to an end, after over 30 years of exploring the Skywalker family. Although Disney still plans n rolling out Star Wars shows and movies, it is still the end of an era and many Star Wars fans just can’t handle the wait.
Fortunately, there are many shows that have gained some influence from the Galaxy far, far away and have created shows very similar. Here are 10 shows you need to watch if you’re a Star Wars Fan.
10 Firefly (2002-2003)
Created by the great Joss Whedon, this drama show takes place 500 years in the future, a bleak future with little hope. Nathan Fillion plays a Han Solo like character as he mans a small ship and crew as they travel the galaxy, avoiding authority agents and looking to settle down in peace.
Besides the Solo-esque character, Firefly draws a lot of influence from the Star Wars saga, including their form of space travel and their adventures in the wide galaxy.
9 Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)
A remake of the popular 1970s show, Battlestar Galactica is the perfect show to watch for Star Wars fans. Like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica is set in a distant galaxy, where a human colony lives in harmony in the 12 colonies. It all goes south when the Colonies create an android race that turns against them and starts a war.
It is up to a human scientist and his crew to save the colonies and put a stop to androids.
8 Babylon 5 (1993-1997)
This series takes place over 200 years in the future in the year 2257 where Earth has a unifying the ability to travel through space and travel the universe very similar to the Star Wars universe.
the first season takes place just 10 years after, Earth was nearly defeated in a war with the spiritual an alien race, only to escape destruction when they unexpectedly surrendered at the brink of victory; since then, Earth has established peaceful relationships with them.
7 Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007)
Arguably one of the most successful shows on this list, Stargate SG-1 ran for 10 seasons and created one a cult following that could rival the Star Wars fandom.
Unlike other shows on this list, the crew in Stargate only just discovered space travel and the show revolves around them exploring space and all it has to offer. Of course, it’s a tough and dangerous mission as we all know not every planet is friendly to visitors from other planets.
6 Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016-2018)
Voltron takes place in a distant future where an evil alien race takes control of the universe and enslaves species of all kinds for almost hundreds of years. It's not looking so good for humans as they seem to take the short end of the stick on this side of history.
It is up to five heroes to save the world from danger and bring peace to their galaxy. Sound familiar? it’s almost identical to Star Wars movie plots and could interest fans to watch.
5 The Expanse (2015-)
The expanse is yet another dystopian future show set in a world where humans have colonized the Solar system. From Earth to Pluto, it seems like humans have discovered ways to live and explore our solar system in a way we can only dream of today.
Based on the novel series of the same name, the series follows a group of questionable heroes who travel the solar system to solve a mystery that is threatening their way of life.
4 Altered Carbon (2018-)
This cyberpunk Netlfix series is based on a novel of the same name once again takes place in the future, a future where the person's memories and consciousness can be decanted in a disk-shaped device which is implanted in the back of the neck. The technology was developed by an alien race who is now the populating species on earth, outnumbering the humans.
This, in turn, makes humans immortal but this luxury is only for the people with the money to afford it. The show follows a rebel soldier who is brought back to life to solve his 300-year-old murder.
3 Dark Matter (2015-2017)
The next show starts in a very vague and mysterious way, with six strangers waking up on a mysterious ship and to survive must work together to command the ship. They have no memory of their past lives and use the help of an android to discover their identities and the reason for their memory loss.
They discover nothing on the ship that could clue them in except for the wide array of weapons and their destination, a planet on the brink of war. It adds the suspense of the Skywalker saga with the mystery of a thriller in a unique and interesting way.
2 Doctor Who (1963-1989; 2005-)
As the longest-running show on the list, it’s safe to say binging isn’t out of the question with this show. Similar to James Bond or Batman, several actors have taken on the mantle of the doctor, and all just create the everlasting history of this great show.
Although it doesn’t deal with space and adventures like Star Wars or other shows on the list, Doctor Who deals with time and dimension traveling which is very similar to space travel in the space opera shows. It makes for an interesting change from space and adds the earth element with the sci-fi and consequences of time travel.
1 Lost In Space (2018-)
This last show is the most recent, being released in 2018 and the second season being released just days of writing this. Lost in Space is a reboot of the popular 70s show that follows a family of humans who looks to outer space to colonize other planets and start a life in another galaxy.
The show revolves around a family, the Robinsons and their android that has built an attachment to their youngest son, Will. This is where the famous saying “Danger, Will Robinson” came from. And like Star Wars, this family has to deal with the constant dangers of space and the colonies who look to overtake the new humans visiting their planet.
