The Star Wars sequels left many questions unanswered, and one of those is what happened to Luke Skywalker’s green lightsaber, which only appeared once. After over 40 years of Star Wars history, the Skywalker saga came to an end with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final entry in Disney’s sequel trilogy. J.J. Abrams’ latest film attempted to address and solve most of the plot holes and threads left by the previous sequels, but sadly, it didn’t succeed.
The sequels focused on a new generation of heroes (Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron) and villains (Kylo Ren, General Hux, and Supreme Leader Snoke), but they also brought back characters from the original trilogy, giving closure to Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Sheev Palpatine - though that doesn’t mean all of their arcs got satisfying endings. Along with the original trio came objects that fans know very well, and the whereabouts of one remained a mystery, as what happened to it wasn’t shown in any of the films.
Luke’s blue lightsaber had an important place in the sequels, as Rey was drawn to it in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and it became her primary weapon for the rest of the trilogy. However, Luke’s green lightsaber was nowhere to be seen.
After losing his father’s blue lightsaber in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Luke built his own green-bladed lightsaber, which he used during the Battle of Endor in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Though he threw this weapon away after almost killing his father and declaring himself to be a Jedi, he recovered it following the Emperor’s supposed death – and yet, it didn’t make an appearance in the sequel trilogy.
The only time it appeared was in a flashback scene in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, where Luke approached his nephew and then Padawan, Ben Solo, after sensing the darkness in him. He activated the lightsaber out of instinct, and Solo thought his master was about to kill him, so he destroyed the Jedi Temple they were at. Some fans theorized that R2-D2 could have recovered the lightsaber after the destruction of the Temple, and had been keeping it in its storage compartment, as seen in Return of the Jedi. However, in The Last Jedi novelization, it’s mentioned that the Caretakers on Ahch-To took many of Luke’s possessions, among those his star compass and his “weapon”. Although it doesn’t explicitly say that the weapon is the green lightsaber, it’s fair to assume it’s now being kept by the Caretakers as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker didn’t show or mention what happened to it.
Unless Disney chooses to address this topic on a different book or other media related to the Star Wars saga, the green lightsaber’s location will be somewhere in Ahch-To, and it might not be recovered by anyone as Rey now has her own lightsaber (and Ben Solo is dead). The green lightsaber is just one of the many mysteries the sequels refused to address on screen, along with how Maz Kanata got the blue one.
