In the wake of its underperformance at the box office this weekend, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) now has a new title on movie theater websites like AMC and Regal Cinema. That new title is Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, which is a lot simpler.
By putting Harley Quinn’s name front and center, I imagine Warner Bros. is hoping that the title change will make it clearer to audiences who the film focuses on, so they can sell more tickets. I have no idea if changing the title like this will really work, from what I’ve seen, a lot of fans and audiences just don’t seem interested in the film regardless of the title.
The movie was met with a lot of positive reviews from the critics, so I imagine there are other people that have seen the movie that loved it as well. I thought the movie ok and was hoping to be a lot more entertained than I was. A lot of people I know haven’t even watched the movie yet and they tell me they don’t have any plans on watching it. They just have no interest in it. I imagine that’s how a lot of other people feel, which is why the box office numbers fell below what the studio was expecting.
I think a Harley Quinn movie could be a huge hit for the studio, she’s such a great character! But I think the studio and creative talent just haven’t been able to come up us a great story to tell for her.
Do you think that a change of the title like this will help the movie sell more tickets?
