In 1980, The Empire Strikes Back was released and alongside what is widely considered the best Star Wars movie of all time, fans were introduced to new characters such as the Emperor, Lando Calrissian, and of course Yoda. Yoda is in exile on Dagobah, where Obi-Wan tells Luke he must go to train in the ways of the Force and is one of the most iconic characters in all of Star Wars.
Puppeteer and voiced by the incomparable Frank Oz, Yoda is one of the most unique characters in the franchise and his specific way of speaking, coupled with his immense wisdom has led to some of the franchises best and most memorable quotes. Here are 10 of Yoda's most iconic quotes.
10 "SIZE MATTERS NOT. LOOK AT ME. JUDGE ME BY MY SIZE DO YOU?" - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Yodas stature is something that is never an issue to the little green Grand Master. His knowledge, wisdom, and skills in the Force make up for anything that could be construed as a shortcoming in his height.
When Luke is unable to lift his X-wing out of the swamp on Dagobah and tells Yoda as such. Yoda responds with the above quote, following it up with "And well, you should not. For my ally is the Force." and proceeds to use the Force to lift the X-wing, proving his quote to be true in one of the films best moments.
9 "WHEN 900 YEARS OLD YOU REACH, LOOK AS GOOD YOU WILL NOT." - RETURN OF THE JEDI
The long life of Yoda comes to an end in Return of the Jedi as the powerful being goes to rest, Luke by his side, and becomes one with the Force. Before doing so, Yoda and Luke have quite the conversation in which contains a snippet of Yoda's comedic chops.
Yoda's quip of "When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not." is not a laugh out loud funny quote, but rather just a lighthearted moment and memorable line in a scene that ultimately ends in grave sadness.
8 "READY ARE YOU? WHAT KNOW YOU OF READY? ..." - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
The reveal that the hyperactive, strange speaking, small green alien Luke encounters on Dagobah as Master Yoda was likely as much of a shock to some fans as it was to Luke. When Yoda reveals himself, he goes on a tangent that all in itself is iconic.
When Luke insists he is ready to train as a Jedi, Yoda immediately puts him in his place. Yoda tells Luke he has trained Jedi for over 800 years and has been watching Luke as he desperately seeks the future and horizon instead of being patient and focusing on the present. He tells Luke adventure and excitement are not luxuries a Jedi can afford in a fantastic rant.
7 "YOU MUST UNLEARN WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED!" - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Yoda's wise nature and clear experience in the training of Jedi for hundreds of years is explored and developed in The Empire Strikes Back as he trains Luke with immense patience and powerful teaching.
When Luke tells Yoda he cannot move his ship because it is too different, Yoda refuses this excuse. He tells Luke it is only different in his mind and tells him "You must unlearn, what you have learned." basically telling Luke to forgets what he thinks he knows as what he believes he may no is blocking his ability to believe and to achieve.
6 "NO. THERE IS ANOTHER." - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Yoda leaves a big air of mystery in his appearance in The Empire Strikes Back with his last words in the movie that have become completely memorable and one of the go-to quotes people think of when Yoda and this film is brought up.
Those last words are "No. There is another." which he utters to Obi-Wan after Luke decides to leave Dagobah to go save his friends at Cloud City. When Obi-Wan tells Yoda Luke is their last hope, Yoda utters these words, inducing mass speculation in 1980 and a memorable moment that is paid off in Return of the Jedi when Yoda utters "There is another Skywalker." as his last words, referring to Leia, Luke's twin sister.
5 "THE SHROUD OF THE DARK SIDE HAS FALLEN. BEGUN THE CLONE WAR HAS." - ATTACK OF THE CLONES
The writing and iconography of the prequel scripts may not be to the level of the original trilogy, but Yoda does have a fair few great quotes and one of the most memorable and symbolic comes in Attack of the Clones.
After the Battle of Geonosis and the saving of the Jedi by Yoda and the Clones, when back on Coruscant, Yoda harrowingly proclaims that "The shroud of darkness has fallen. Begun, the Clone War has." kicking off one of the most famous wars of the Star Wars franchise.
4 "THE GREATEST TEACHER FAILURE IS." - THE LAST JEDI
Yoda's appearance to Luke on Ach-To as a Force spirit in The Last Jedi is one of the films best moments. It brings a wave of nostalgia and emotion as well as typical Yoda brilliance and wisdom opposite the amazing Mark Hammil.
Upon his return and his use of weather manipulation in his spiritual state to burn down the tree with the sacred texts, Yoda talks with Luke and delivers him a great line "The greatest teacher failure is." Yoda imparts another piece of great wisdom on his student here, letting him know failure is something to embrace and learn from to better yourself, not to be scared of and run from.
3 "WE ARE WHAT THEY GROW BEYOND. THAT IS THE BURDEN OF ALL MASTERS." - THE LAST JEDI
Another brilliant piece of dialogue that comes on Acho-To in The Last Jedi though Yoda has he remains talking to Luke watching the firey tree filled with (or at least Luke thought so) with sacred texts.
Yoda this time tells Luke that "We are what they grow beyond. That is the burden of all masters." Apprentices grow, develop, and take their masters' place one day, surpassing them in the process as is the circle of life. It is also representative of the film's message of embracing the future rather than clinging desperately to the past, a message as great as this quote and its delivery.
2 "FEAR IS THE PATH TO THE DARK SIDE. FEAR LEADS TO ANGER. ANGER LEADS TO HATE. HATE LEADS TO SUFFERING." - THE PHANTOM MENACE
As mentioned before, the writing for the prequel dialogue is well below average at best. However, it has come up with some absolute gems that have become some of the most iconic in Star Wars, one such quote coming in The Phantom Menace.
As the Jedi Council question Anakin to decide whether or not they want to have him trained in the ways of the Force and the Jedi, Yoda asks Anakin if he is scared to lose his mother. Anakin replies to this "What has that got to do with anything?" to which Yoda replies "Everything." before unleashing the brilliant quote "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
1 "NO. TRY NOT. DO. OR DO NOT. THERE IS NO TRY." - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
The entirety of Yoda's screen time in The Empire Strikes Back is made up of classic moments, and brilliant quotes that are unbelievably memorable for fans of the movie. Yoda's most well known, and quoted, and the iconic line also comes in this movie.
Again while training Luke, following the "Unlearn what you have learned." speech, Luke says "Alright, I'll try." to which Yoda quickly snaps back "No! Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try." It is one of Star Wars' best quotes and is one that fans immediately think of at the mention of Yoda, whether it be for its wisdom, effectiveness, or status as a brilliant piece of mentoring, it has and will continue to stick in the minds of fans for years.
