Review: ESCAPE FROM PRETORIA Starring Daniel Radcliffe Tells An Incredible True Story That Kept Me on the Edge of My Seat
I was given the opportunity to watch the film Escape From Pretoria ahead of its opening this week. The film is based on a true story, chronicled in the autobiography Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria Prison, and stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter, Miracle Workers), Daniel Webber (11.22.63, The Punisher), Mark Leonard Winter (Top of the Lake), Ian Hart (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), Nathan Page (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries), and Stephen Hunter (The Hobbit). The film was directed by Francis Annan, who co-wrote the adaptation with LH Adams.
The story follows political activists Tim Jenkin (Radcliffe) and Stephen Lee (Webber) as they are incarcerated for setting bombs that distributed illegal pamphlets in the late 1970’s South Africa during apartheid. The two men are imprisoned, and together work on a plan to escape from the jail that they are meant to spend the next decade in. They find men with common values and hopes to fight the laws that got them there.
The film was an interesting look at South Africa in the late 1970’s, but even more fascinating was the look at the lives of the men who were imprisoned. Against all odds, their spirits were unbroken, and it was what made the difference to their futures. The movie was steadily interesting for the first half, then became an edge-of-your-seat nail-biter. I rooted for these men, and held my breath for much of the exciting story. I highly recommend this film, and applaud the performances in it.
Check out Escape From Pretoria In Theaters, On Demand and Digital, this Friday, March 6, 2020.
