New Amsterdam is one of the latest medical dramas to capture viewers' hearts. The series, now in its second season, is about Dr. Max Goodwin, the new medical director at New Amsterdam hospital who comes in with a "how can I help?" mentality and a desire to do what he can for the patients, at any cost. Sadly, a car accident led to the death of his wife right after she had given birth to their daughter, leaving him a single father. Some time has passed, and, while he continues to grieve, it might be time for Max to move on and find new love.
But who? He met a wonderful woman named Alice by chance, but there has always been an unspoken bond between him and Dr. Helen Sharpe. Which one would be better for him?
10 Being With Helen Would Disrespect His Late Wife: Alice
Helen has been around as a friend and confidante since when Max was married to Georgia, but there seemed to be a connection between them that went beyond friends. If there truly is a spark there, he should explore it. However, doing so would disrespect his late wife. Did he always have feelings for Helen, even when Georgia was alive? It wouldn’t sit well. With Alice, there's no history to get in the way.
9 He Clearly Has Feelings For Her: Helen
That said, Max clearly has feelings for Helen, and she for him. They have vaguely alluded to their feelings for one another, even coming close to sharing a kiss once. If there's a passion there and they love one another, why not pursue it?
The truth is that Georgia isn’t going to come back. Would Max have pursued Hele? if Georgia were still alive, unable to contain his feelings? Who knows. But the reality is that she isn’t here anymore so that doesn't really matter.
8 They Make a Perfect Match: Alice
Max met Alice by chance in the waiting area of the pediatric division of the hospital as they both had appointments for their babies. They struck up a conversation, and it seemed easy between them. There was nothing romantic, but the attraction grew.
As they hung out for playdates with their kids, they eventually took things to another level and went on an adult date. They seem to mesh so well together.
7 They Communicate Well: Helen
Helen is seemingly the one person at New Amsterdam who can get through to Max about things and who understands what he wants to accomplish and knows a way to get it done. They have this uncanny way of understanding one another without even speaking.
Being able to communicate so flawlessly with someone is a rarity. Maybe it means they just work well together or that they are great best friends. Or maybe it could be something more.
6 She Understands His Loss: Alice
Max and Alice share a special bond in that they both lost their spouses. So, Alice understands what Max is going through and how he's feeling more than anyone else. If he is feeling down or uncomfortable or needs a moment, she totally gets it. And, if he needs to move slowly, she gets that, too.
5 She Gets His Work Obligations: Helen
Being a doctor herself and someone who is fiercely dedicated to her job, Helen totally understands Max's work ethic and his need to always help everyone. If he has to work late or gets emotionally invested in a patient, she gets it.
Chances are that, if he was working late, she would be working, too, which means they'd get to spend time together despite their demanding careers.
4 Their Kids Get Along Well: Alice
They are still babies, so it doesn't take much to get along with one another, but their kids do seem to play well together and miss one another when they don't see them. The more time they spend together, they seem to view one another as siblings already. The relationship could be good, not only for Max and Alice, but for the kids, as well, as they both grow up and deal with the fact that their other parent isn't around.
3 She Longs For A Child: Helen
Helen has wanted a child for a while, considering adoption when she discovered that she could not have children. She has offered to babysit Luna many times and clearly has an affection for both Max and the child. Not that Helen could ever take Georgia's place, but starting a relationship with Max, a single father, wouldn't be odd for her since she wants a kid anyway.
2 There's Chemistry Between Them: Alice
It's hard to deny the obvious chemistry between Max and Alice that they both seem to be fighting due to guilt more than anything else—more so Max than Alice. She lost her husband earlier than Max and has had more time to grieve.
He, on the other hand, seems rife with guilt any time he feels something for Alice, as though he's cheating on his wife. But, it's time to move on and the chemistry between them is electric is not something they should let go of simply due to bad timing.
1 She Has Always Been There For Him: Helen
When Max was sick with cancer, Helen was the first person to jump in and help. She exhausted every option to find an experimental treatment for him and was there for him emotionally, as well. He would never have beaten cancer without her, and that has created a special bond between them that will forever tie them to one another.
