Whether fans loved him or hated him, Michael Scott was the center of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton universe. As the regional manager, Michael was in charge of his branch’s successes and failures in The Office. However, he didn’t always realize what made his branch one of the most successful in the company.
It was his adoration for his employees that made the branch see Michael's highest highs and his lowest lows. Michael is the kind of man that loves so hard that bad things tend to happen afterward. But even in his darkest moments, fans can’t help but pull for the man. After all, he’s a child in a man’s body at times. To see five moments viewers hated Michael (and five times they felt bad for him), keep reading.
10 Felt bad: When Jan Made Him Get A Vasectomy
”Dinner Party” was one of the most iconic episodes in The Office’s nine seasons. Michael finally has the opportunity to hang out with Jim and Andy outside of work, and it’s at his house no less. But as soon as Michael and Jan have people over for their dinner party, their personal dramas take over the room as they get into a public disagreement about having children. With tears in his eyes, Michael claims he’s had three vasectomies and that Jan didn’t realize the toll that had on a man.
9 Hated: When He Dated Pam’s Mom (And Broke Up With Her On Her Birthday)
Fans are torn on whether or not Pam’s reaction to Michael dating her mother was dramatic or not. She screamed, she cried, she threw tantrums — she even slapped him. Michael wasn’t a bad guy, he just didn’t understand boundaries.
The real problem wasn’t Michael dating Helene, it was the way he broke up with her. After realizing how old Helene was, he broke up with her on her birthday... at a restaurant... in front of Jim and Pam.
8 Felt bad: When Jan & David Wallace Threw Him Under The Bus
All Michael wants is to be loved. After working at Dunder Mifflin for over 14 years, he had a close bond with the CEO David Wallace and, of course, Jan. But when Jan filed a wrongful termination lawsuit, Michael was dragged in the middle.
Jan stole his diary as evidence for their personal life (which greatly upset him), and he found out that both David and Jan wrote unfavorable things about him. Michael sadly realized that Jan wrote negative work reviews for him while they were dating and that David didn’t take him seriously.
7 Hated: Scott’s Tots
There’s nothing more humiliating or heartbreaking than Scott’s Tots. In the episode, Michael revealed he promised an entire classroom of young kids tuition for their colleges. He figured by the time those kids were seniors in high school, he’d be a millionaire and would be able to help them...
His millionaire status never came, but those kids sure did when they were about to graduate. Michael had to awkwardly tell the students that he had no money for them. All he had was a laptop battery for each of them...
6 Felt bad: When Everyone Turned Him Down For Lunch
Lunch at Dunder Mifflin was different for everyone. Some are in the break room, others ate in the kitchen, and some went out for lunch. No matter the circumstance, Michael never seemed to be involved at lunch unless he took someone out to eat. While it’s safe to say managers should separate themselves from the rest of the group, Michael didn’t want that. After being denied from lunch, he says the saddest thing: "They got what they wanted, I am eating alone, might as well be dinner." Hearing that Michael eats alone day after day was a tough pill to swallow.
5 Hated: When He Ruined The Glee Party
When Erin became comfortable at Dunder Mifflin, viewers learned she grew up in the foster care system and was never adopted. She yearned for parental figures and looked for them at work. This became apparent when she and ex-boyfriend Gabe were throwing a Glee viewing party. Michael hesitantly showed up to support Erin but after seeing how great of a life Gabe had, Michael got sassy. He ended up playing around with the cables so no one could watch the ending of Glee. That’s how childish Michael can be.
4 Felt bad: Michael's Childhood
The more viewers got to know Michael, the more they had sympathy for his crazy actions. Michael didn’t have the traditional childhood he would have hoped for. His mom can be cold to him and got re-married to a man Michael didn’t like. He also didn’t have many friends.
In a throwback video, Michael claimed his dream was to have a bunch of kids so that he would one day have a bunch of friends. Now that’s heartbreaking.
3 Hated: He Outted Oscar!
In a very controversial episode, Oscar was tired of Michael unknowingly using gay slurs. Oscar speaking up about the injustice showed Oscar to be gay. Instead of keeping Oscar’s sexual orientation to himself, Michael outted him in front of the entire office. Oscar wasn’t even able to come out to himself let alone on camera to his co-workers! Michael also kissed Oscar to prove he didn’t have any prejudices. The entire ordeal was sick and unfortunate and made Oscar feel violated.
2 Felt bad: When Jim Let Him Fall Into The Koi Pond
As easy as it is to pick on Michael, he never handles it well. Remember when he wanted his co-workers to roast him? Most roastees take it all in jest but not Michael. What was worse was when Jim allowed Michael to fall into the koi pond while out for business. Jim could have easily saved Michael from falling in but he let him sink instead. Michael was so embarrassed by the incident but Jim looked worse.
1 Hated: His Racial Outbursts
Many fans on Reddit agree that Michael isn’t a racist — he’s just idiotic and unknowing. The most memorable of episodes was “Diversity Day.” Michael thought it was a good idea to racially profile one another in the middle of the workday. He’s also incredibly misinformed about Kelly’s religion and was rude when the IT man came to fix Michael’s computer.
