An intriguing side-scrolling game called A Tale of Paper is coming to PS4 on October 21st. The game looks like a mix of the papercraft world of the Paper Mario series with the dark, intimate themes of Little Nightmares. The horror platformer is getting a sequel sometime in 2021 in the form of Little Nightmares 2.
For a long time now papercraft in video games has been largely Nintendo's territory. The Paper Mario franchise is far from Nintendo's most popular series but it's a long-lived one with a dedicated fanbase. Earlier this year that fanbase saw the release of Paper Mario: The Origami King for the Switch. Despite carrying over many of the controversial decisions made by other recent Paper Mario games, The Origami King did decently well for itself, and became the fastest-selling game in the series after its release.
As The Origami King showed, making characters out of paper offers some unique opportunities for horror, or at the very least, for dark, morbid themes. Developer Open House Games seems to be continuing that trend with A Tale Of Paper, which recently got a new gameplay trailer on YouTube. The game casts players as a tiny papercraft character named Line who must fold his body using origami in order to transcend obstacles. Line can glide across gaps as a paper airplane or leap over obstacles as a paper frog. Along the way, Line will face dangerous enemies, including massive spiders and even evil Roombas. Since Line has no form of attack, players will have to use their wits to evade these fearsome foes. Check out the trailer below.
Open House Games is promising a deep story in A Tale of Paper as Line struggles to fulfill the dream of his creator. The story will be told during gameplay, and Open House has promised a fully textless experience. Influences from games like Inside and Little Nightmares are evident throughout the trailer, as Line makes his way through dark and atmospheric locales to reach his goal. The game is rated E for Everyone, though, so players shouldn't expect too much of a horror show.
Fans of creative and spooky platformers will likely have a lot of fun with A Tale of Paper. Open House Games clearly put a lot of work into the game's dark, whimsical atmosphere, and the team looks to have had a lot of fun with the unique, papercraft nature of its player character. A final verdict on the quality of the game can't be made until release, but based on this trailer, A Tale of Paper looks like a journey worth taking.
