Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will introduce to the MCU one more villain created by Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.). Classic Avengers villain Kang the Conqueror will be brought to life in Ant-Man’s third movie by Lovecraft Country actor Jonathan Majors. In the comic books, Kang is a time-traveler from the future who uses advanced technology in his attempts to conquer present-day Earth and defeat his most hated enemies, the Avengers.
Marvel recently announced new details about its Phase 4 slate, including official reveals for two more MCU films: Fantastic Four and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man 3 will bring back Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and the original Wasp (Michelle Pfeiffer) for a time travel adventure that involves Kang the Conqueror.
The inclusion of Kang adds an extra villain to the MCU linked to Iron Man’s legacy. The movie’s title, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, indicates – as expected – that Kang’s time-traveling will be connected to the Quantum Realm. It was Iron Man (with help from Ant-Man) who developed a method to use the Quantum Realm to travel back into the past and retrieve the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame. It would seem that Tony’s technology will be utilized by Kang when he carries out his plans for conquest in Phase 4. As for how this could be possible, it could be that in the distant future when Iron Man is a celebrated figure and the battle to stop Thanos is a historic event, Kang will get his hands on Stark’s research and tech.
It appears that what Iron Man did in Endgame will be the catalyst for Kang’s arrival in Ant-Man 3. What’s interesting about that is that it won’t be the first time a villain was born from Iron Man’s deeds. The first was actually Iron Monger (Jeff Bridges), who built his armor off designs he stole from Stark. Another was Killian (Guy Pearce), who used Stark’s Extremis tech to become a major threat in Iron Man 3. The biggest and most literal example of Iron Man creating an MCU villain came in Avengers: Age of Ultron when his Ultron program turned into a powerful killer robot that destroyed a city and nearly took out the entire team. Iron Man’s technology runs the risk of giving rise to a few more villains in Armor Wars, given that War Machine (Don Cheadle) will be on a mission to stop Stark’s armor from being weaponized.
Kang could prove to be worse than all of them when he comes onto the scene in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. His time travel tech would give him the capability to rewrite time and conquer the civilization of his choosing. This ability could also make him the MCU’s next big bad for the foreseeable future, especially since there’s a good chance that Marvel won’t be limiting him to just Ant-Man 3. He could return as the antagonist who unites the next generation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers 5.
