Doctor Who's Michelle Gomez Wants to Return as Missy

Michelle Gomez says that she would like to return to Doctor Who to reprise her role as Missy in the future. The Scot first joined Doctor Who in 2014 to face off Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor. Missy's addition was a turning point in the show as it was the first confirmation that Time Lords could change their sex through regeneration, leading to Jodie Whittaker becoming the first female Doctor a few years later. Whittaker's era (also marked by new showrunner Chris Chibnall) recently rolled out a controversial plot twist that the Doctor is a Timeless Child, and fans have yet to learn if the Master is one as well.

The Master (or Missy, as Gomez's iteration was called) is one of the Doctor's most famous adversaries. Over the years, the character's evil plans often involve huge swings against the human race, such as infiltrating the world by becoming England's prime minister, trying to turn Earth into the new Gallifrey, and harvesting humanity's deceased to create an army of Cybermen. Whenever he or she appears, the Master is always an endearing enemy of the Doctor due to their complicated history dating back thousands of years. And no matter who acts in the role, the character is always chaotic and spiteful. Sacha Dhawan, who played the Master in season 12, exemplified this well and helped cause an upswing in ratings after a rocky season 11.

When asked by DigitalSpy if Doctor Who was a "closed chapter," Gomez answered with a resounding no. You can read her quote below:

"Oh no, it's not! It's never a closed chapter as far as Doctor Who is concerned! I would love to, at some point, pop back up again. That's a firm 'yes, I'm available!' Well, I'm not actually, not right now. But I will be. I will be!"

Dhawan may be the latest version of the Master, but thanks to the show's complicated timeline, there is always a chance to see old regenerations again. The last time Gomez appeared in Doctor Who was alongside John Simms' version of the Master, so there is plenty of precedent for Gomez returning to the show. Luckily for Missy fans, Gomez says that she is very open to the idea of returning.

Gomez's current unavailability is due to her recent roles on HBO Max's The Flight Attendant and Netflix's The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Hopefully, when she does become available, Doctor Who will ask Gomez to come back. As of yet, no one from the show has said anything to hint at Missy's return, but the show has a habit of bringing back old characters when they can. Most recently, it has been confirmed that John Barrowman will return as Captain Jack Harkness for the New Year's holiday special.

Although fans have been gifted with episodes that involve characters from Doctor Who's past, the creation of said episodes is entirely dependent on whether or not the actor is willing. Actors to the titular role who have returned in the reboot include David Tennant and Tom Baker, who both made it back for the show's 50th-anniversary special. On the other hand, some actors leave the role behind them, such as the 9th Doctor's Christopher Eccleston. But seeing as Gomez is fully onboard, a reprisal of Missy will come in the foreseeable future.
