Gmail Down? Google Confirms Issue As Users Experience Email Problems

Gmail is not quite down although a number of users may currently be encountering issues when accessing Google’s email service. This follows on from the more widespread Google services outage that took place yesterday, with the notable difference being how quickly the previous issue was fixed and how long it will take for the current problem to be fully resolved.

Early yesterday morning, many Google services, including Gmail and YouTube went down. Considering the reach of Google, the issue had the potential to impact a serious number of users, but Google was quick to respond with the problem reported as fixed around 45 minutes after it came to light. While the current problem only seems to be affecting Gmail and not the other Google services, this is an email service that’s used by a lot of people and therefore, also has the potential to affect a large number of those using the email service for work or personal reasons, and on multiple platforms.

Besides Gmail users taking to social media today to note issues with the email service, Google itself has posted an update to its Gmail status page explaining that there is a problem with the email service at the moment. What’s more, Google says it is aware that a “significant subset of users” are possibly being affected. Google hasn’t explained what’s causing the issue or when it expects the problem to be resolved, although it is due to provide further updates as the problem continues. Besides the initial update, a second update was released confirming the Gmail issues are ongoing and the company is “continuing to investigate” while a third update suggested that the issue might be fixed for some, but not all users.

Again, users have been taking to social media sites to explain some of the problems they have been countering, such as the inability to send or receive emails and other strange changes. To add to this, Google’s note explains that users may encounter “unexpected behavior” in a variety of ways, including but not limited to, error messages or high latency. While it is clear that Gmail is having issues at the moment, both user reports and Google confirm that there’s nothing wrong with access in general. In other words, while there is a high chance that a user will experience random and strange behaviors, they still can actually access Gmail.

Of course, that might not matter much if they are unable to send and receive emails, or manage their inbox. However, with no firm information on when the issue will be fully fixed or even what’s causing the problems, there’s not a lot Gmail users can do right now. Google is currently aware of the issue and is investigating the problem so hopefully it will be fixed for all users sooner rather than later.
