Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Trailer Reveals Season 2 Release Date

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is coming back for a second season, and the new trailer is loaded with action and a menagerie of prehistoric creatures. Season 1 released earlier this year to a generally positive response, receiving particular praise for its gorgeous animation. The second season looks just as pretty, featuring some new island locations as the cast of kids fight for their lives while awaiting rescue on Isla Nublar.

When Camp Cretaceous season 1 released on Netflix, it brought a fresh take on the classic Jurassic Park formula. Set during and after the events of the first Jurassic World, the animated show follows a group of teenagers who visit the eponymous dinosaur theme park as part of a special prehistoric sleepaway camp. Unfortunately, their time on Isla Nubla overlaps with the park’s failure and the dinos' escape, leading to a frantic fight to survive.

The Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous season 2 trailer, recently released on the Jurassic World YouTube channel, picks up right where the first season left off, with Yaz, Darius, Kenji, Sammy, and Brooklynn hiding from dinosaurs as they try to find a way to communicate with the mainland. The trailer shows no sign of Benny, who was separated from the others at the end of season 1 but is presumably still alive. It does, however, feature plenty of antics, scheming, and of course, running from giant dinosaurs. A cliffhanger ending shows a flare being fired from an unseen location, suggesting the campers aren’t alone on the island. The trailer also reveals the new season’s Netflix release date – January 22, 2021.

It will be interesting to see if the show’s second season can grow to take on some of the first’s criticisms. Though the show’s visuals, voice cast, and young audience appeal have been widely praised, the characters and writing of season 1 have met harsher criticism. To be sure, the task Camp Cretaceous has set for itself – balancing kid-friendly energy and comic relief with the rather horrifying context of a Jurassic Park story – is a difficult one. Whether or not it can rise above its current perception as a beautifully animated but simple cartoon remains to be seen.

Given Netflix’s past success with original animated programming, the chances seem to be in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous’s favor. Series like Voltron: Legendary Defender, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and The Dragon Prince have all been praised for bridging audiences both young and old and pairing top-notch visuals with compelling narratives. With luck, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous will follow suit when it returns for its sophomore season on January 22.
