Cobra Kai has managed to create something that has been unheard of before. Picking a beloved movie franchise from the 80s The Karate Kid, which is still fresh in the memories of fans and relevant in pop-culture, writers Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg have created a universe that is not just amazing but immensely fun to watch.
However what the show manages to achieve is an enthralling redemption story for Johnny, who by far has one of the best character arcs in the series. While there are many loved and hated characters in the show, Johny Lawrence is one who ranks quite high as far as likability is concerned. Furthermore, he is one character that raises the comedic bar of Cobra Kai, having delivered some of the best dialogues that the series has. However, his dialogues are not just limited to comedy but also to the intrinsic badassery that Cobra Kai stands for.
10 Badass: "Now you listen up. When you came to me you were softer than a baby's a**. I made you what you are, not Kreese."
At the end of season 2 fans see Johnny Lawrence ditching his Cobra Kai family and deciding to quit being a sensei after seeing what had happened to Miguel. However, after realizing his true calling as a sensei and how John Kreese is corrupting the young minds at Cobra Kai, he faces the students he had ditched and apologizes to them.
Hawk, however, is not having any of this weak behavior saying that it was he who became soft. Johnny’s response is nothing short of badass, where he reminds Hawk that before joining Cobra Kai he was nothing but a wimpy kid and it was him and not Kreese who made him into the fearsome guy he is today. He also urges them to see that if they go on the path Kreese is teaching them, they would only find unhappiness and regret.
9 Hilarious: "Your car’s ringing."
Johnny might be a cool dude, but when it comes to technology he is anything but. His relationship with technology is like that of oil with water. They simply do not match. During the second episode of season 3, when Johnny and Daniel go out to look for Robby, Amanda calls Daniel on his phone.
Owing to the phone being connected with the car, the caller-tune rings on the car’s speaker. Johnny oblivious to the fact that such a technology is even possible, hilariously replies, “Your car’s ringing.”
8 Badass: "Go anywhere near Miguel and his family, and I'll kill you."
Johnny Lawrence is a character who has his fair share of flaws, but his redeeming qualities in Cobra Kai make him a character that fans have come to love and sympathize with. One of his biggest flaws is his past, but his regret for that past redeems him in many ways.
Therefore, it is understandable how he is protective of Miguel whom he views as his son, and does not want him to have any kind of dealings with John Kreese, the guy who ruined Johnny’s childhood. Therefore, when Kreese comes to invite Johnny to join the Cobra Kai once again and says that both of them will help Miguel stand on his feet once he recovers, Johnny’s response to his demented former-sensei is nothing short of badass.
7 Hilarious: "Tastiest babes in 1988."
Johnny Lawrence is by far one of the funniest characters on Cobra Kai. While many fans were busy correctly or erroneously predicting what might happen in season 3 before its release, nobody doubted that Johnny would retain his humorous and cocky self, although he ended the previous season on a morose tone.
Therefore, when Johnny in his hilarious attempts to make Miguel walk again dangles on a fishing pole a magazine filled with photographs of swimsuit models, which he had kept from his young days, and says the aforementioned dialogues, fans cannot help but let out a chuckle.
6 Badass: "Quiet! Never! Can't! Those are just words, they're meaningless, It's time to get out of bed and do something."
Miguel’s journey throughout the series has been one of many hardships, especially so in season 3. After being in a coma as a result of his fight with Robby in the school, Miguel wakes up to find that he might never walk again. His despondency and loss of hope are therefore justified.
However, Johnny Lawrence is not having any of that. Despite Miguel not wanting to see him, Johnny realizes that he has to act like Miguel’s sensei now more than ever and delivers this badass and encouraging speech, telling the young kid that life isn’t fair and that sometimes you have to get down to business and do things for yourself no matter how hard it might be and no matter how tough you might have to fight.
5 Hilarious: "Tell your brain to tell your legs to get their asses moving."
Johnny is not someone who knows when to call it quits. Therefore, in order to get Miguel to walk, Johnny goes a step beyond his previous attempts and while keeping the former busy listening to a story he had conjured he lights a fire on his shoelaces and then holds his arms behind his back so that Miguel has no other option but to shake his leg or get up to extinguish the fire.
When Miguel retorts by saying that he can’t move, Johnny just blurts out as a matter of fact that he should tell his brain to tell his leg that they should start moving. Johnny’s ignorance and bizarre rationalization come off as hugely humorous.
4 Badass: "This Park Will Be Our New Dojo Because You Don't Need A Dojo To Be A Dojo"
While this line seems to be funny at first glance it is also quite badass. Johnny has always found ways to do things in life in the most unconventional manners if things don’t happen to fall in place or on his lap.
Therefore, although a public park is nothing close to a traditional dojo, Johnny delivers this badass line to his students of "Eagle Fang Dojo," telling them that as long as their heart and dedication are in the right place, any place can be their dojo. However, in all honesty, Johnny actually did not have the funds to pay for a real dojo.
3 Hilarious: "I don’t want to screw things up with Miguel, then again, you’re pretty hot."
Johnny rarely holds back what is on his mind and blurts them out unapologetically, which makes him one of the most genuine characters on Cobra Kai.
Therefore, when sparks between him and Carmen start to fly, Johnny recognizes that this relationship might complicate the dynamic he has with Miguel, but also recognizes that Carmen is very hot and that is something he can’t really ignore. The dialogue definitely deserves a wry laugh.
2 Badass: "Being A Badass Doesn't Mean Being An A**Hole"
While there are many predictions for season 4 of Cobra Kai, it seems like an inevitable probability that Johnny might have to fight his former sensei John Kreese once and for all.
Therefore, his speech at the school trying to convince his former students what he has realized over the years, is nothing short of badass, in the sense that he acknowledges how Kreese’s teachings have made them strong, but being strong does not necessarily mean that you also have to be a bully. In fact, being a bully actually makes you weak and an a**hole, instead of a badass.
1 Hilarious: "So your wang can still get tang, nice."
Johnny visits his former Cobra Kai mate Bobby in an inebriated state when the latter is addressing a congregation. Bobby points out to Johnny that he is not a priest to which Johnny remarks, “So your wang can still get tang, nice.”
Cracking a joke on the oath of celibacy that priests take, Johnny is his classic crude and “in-your-face” self in this sequence and encourages a burst of hearty laughter.
