The revival of Dexter will be set in Upstate New York. Released in 2006, Dexter quickly became one of Showtime’s most popular series, with Michael C. Hall receiving critical praise for his portrayal of the anti-hero. After eight successful seasons, Dexter ended in 2013 with a series finale regarded as one of the most controversial sign-offs in television history. In the final episode, viewers witnessed Dexter Morgan faking his own death and becoming an isolated lumberjack in Oregon.
Last October, Showtime surprised and delighted Dexter fans when it announced that the show would return for a 10-episode limited series, with Hall set to reprise his role. Helmed by original showrunner Clyde Phillips, who exited the series after its fourth season, Dexter season 9 is expected to release in 2021. So far, the revival has kept plot details under wraps, but Showtime suggested the series takes place one decade after the events of the finale and released the brief synopsis, “ ...the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami.” Now, it has been revealed where Dexter could be causing mayhem next.
Per TVLine, Dexter season 9 will be set in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New York. While the revival will take place in New York, production will begin in Massachusetts next month.
The revival of Dexter has started to round out the cast with Julia Jones (The Mandalorian), Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, and Jack Alcott, who join the recently announced Clancy Brown. Tackling the role as the series’ main antagonist, Brown will play Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of Iron Lake.
Originally set in Miami, Florida, Dexter appears to be giving the serial killer a fresh slate on the East coast. At this time, Hall is the only actor from the original cast slated to return. Of course, it seems the character could once again mingle with the police department in the small town of New York, as Jones will portray Angela Bishop, the first Native Chief of Police in her town, and Miller plays Logan, a sergeant for the Iron Lake Police Department.
Indeed, Dexter season 9 has a high bar to clear after the series faced backlash for its season 8 finale. However, while news of the revival shook fans, Phillips has reportedly been mulling on the next chapter for Dexter for years, which means the revival series has been carefully planned out. The revival of Dexter has become one of Showtime’s most anticipated offerings of 2021, and it can be expected that everyone’s favorite serial killer will have a lot to unpack in the new setting of Iron Lake, New York.
