The upcoming Doogie Howser reboot, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., casts Andi Mack star Peyton Elizabeth Lee. The female-led reboot for Disney+ was first announced in early 2020. Described as a reimagining of the original series, the 10-episode comedy series is set in modern-day Hawaii and follows Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha, a mixed race 16-year-old girl balancing a medical career and teenage life. The series also follows Doogie's family, including her "spit-fire Irish mother" who's also her supervisor, and her "Hawaiian 'Local Boy' father" who has a hard time seeing his daughter grow up. Now the new series has found its Doogie actor.
Variety reports that Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. has cast Andi Mack star Peyton Elizabeth Lee in the titular role. Lee is not new to Disney, as she previously starred in the lead role of Disney Channel's Andi Mack, which ended in 2019 after three seasons. She also recently starred in the Disney+ movie Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, earning her a Critics Choice Award nomination.
The original Doogie Howser starred Neil Patrick Harris as a teenage doctor and aired on ABC for four seasons between 1989 and 1993. Co-created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley, the series was a defining pop culture phenomenon, launching Harris' successful acting career and making him a household name.
Fresh Off The Boat and How I Met Your Mother writer Kourtney Kang is set to write and executive produce the new series, with Jake Kasdan and Melvin Marr also executive producing. While original co-creator Bochco died in 2018, his wife and son Dayna and Jesse Bochco will executive produce the new show. 20th Television, the studio behind the original series, will produce. The series has been in development since early 2020 and a premiere date has not yet been announced.
