Game Of Thrones: 10 Saddest Things About Jon Snow | ScreenRant

Jon Snow became the most heroic character in Game of Thrones and if he had become the King of the Seven Kingdoms it would have been the cherry on top of the cake. He was a fierce, honorable, modest soldier who intended nothing but to fight for justice to all. He went through a wild journey during the entire show, discovering his true identity and always being on the front lines of the most dramatic battles in Westeros.

But a true hero also endures the biggest hardships and is confronted with the toughest choices that make him sacrifice personal happiness in the name of fairness and integrity. Jon Snow's case was no different. There were sad and pivotal moments in Jon's difficult story that changed everything - not only for him but also for the direction of the narrative.

10 Reminded Of his Illegitimacy Too Often

Everyone who calls themselves fans of the most-watched HBO TV show ever knows that Jon Snow spent the great majority of his life being called Ned Stark's "bastard". And the audience believed this too for the first couple of episodes. But in reality, viewers were surprised and also relieved when it was revealed that he was House Targaryen's rightful heir as his parents were Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. This put an end to the bullies that used this argument against this wronged man. So much so that, later on, he was chosen to rule by his people. From a bastard to a king, there's no doubt that Jon Snow came a long way in the series.

9 His Separation From Ghost

If there was one thing that would melt viewers' hearts was when Jon and Ghost interacted with one another. His animal companion was introduced in the show from day one and his loyalty to Jon was one of this character's big life lessons to the audience: to appreciate your pets. The so-called "King in the North" earned the ire of fans during season 8 when he left Winterfell without Ghost. This was a really sad moment as Jon left the direwolf with Tormund and the wildlings, instructing his friend to return Ghost to the "true North." Unfortunately, these two remained separated from the great majority of the show.

8 His Admirable Honor Put Him And His People At Risk

Even though Jon Snow was a truly honorable man, there were moments where fans hated him for his inability to lie. This was especially highlighted during a King's Landing truce when he failed to tell a small lie to the evil Cersei Lannister about bending his knee. The goal was to become allies in the fight against the White Walkers and take his people out of danger.

But by then, Cersei had no idea that Jon had pledged his allegiance to Daenerys. Instead, his pride got in the way as he revealed he had already bent the knee to another queen. Sadly, this decision killed any chances of Cersei supporting his cause.

7 Losing Ygritte On A Battlefield

The relationship between Jon Snow and Ygritte had a real, genuine, passionate dynamic (even though it started off with them hating each other). Die-hard fans will always remember the scene where he officially broke his vows as a brother in black and chased her into a cave to make love to her. Soon after, his duty made him kill some of the wildlings and he ended up betraying her trust. Yet, they clearly wanted to be together and so when Jon saw her being murdered it was incredibly sad to watch. She died in his arms and it was the end of this tragic love story.

6 He Was (Sort Of) Murdered By His Fellow Night's Watch Brothers

When Jon's resurrection happened at the end of season 5, fans could barely believe it. He came back to life after being murdered by a group of the Night's Watch brethren and it shocked everyone. However, no one forgets how saddening it was that he was betrayed by his brothers who were supposed to be there for him. The way they hurt him was brutal because they stabbed him to death. This scene became one of the show's most famous moments and people felt really sorry for him. But thanks to some witchcraft from the Red Woman, Jon finally opened his eyes and gasped for air.

5 Finding Out About His Original Family

The huge plot twist around Snow's real identity has got to be one of the most lingering mysteries in the Game Of Thrones series. But by the time the news finally got to this character, it was already too late in the sense that he had already started a relationship with his aunt, Queen Daenerys. This man had already been through a lot and when fans finally felt enthusiastic that this naive, good person was in love again, it's unlikely that there was someone who didn't feel sympathetic to Jon's shock and sadness. Plus, the Targaryen heir didn't want to be the King of the Seven Kingdoms.

4 He Indeed Knew Nothing (At Least About Politics)

When Ygritte declared that Jon Snow "knew nothing", it became one of the most talked-about quotes on the web. While she didn't really understand the extent of what that sentence represented, it was revealed more and more clear as time passed. For instance, when Jon (former Lord Commander) was elected King in the North, it became apparent that, while he did his best, he knew very little about politics and scheming. The reason for that is that Snow always remained true to himself and his values, no matter what, just like his "father" Ned Stark.

3 Having Daenerys' Back Through It All And Being Left Disappointed

Loyal, honorable, righteous... What more can be said about Jon's qualities and integrity level? While this character evolved hugely from the beginning until the final season, his best traits remained untouched. So when it came to his loyalty to Daenerys' cause, fans didn't expect anything other than his full commitment. Still, their relationship started tense as Jon refused to bend the knee because he wanted the North to remain independent. But after he accepted her as his queen, he lived and breathed to see her sit on the Iron Throne one day. Sadly, as viewers know, she changed dramatically and became ruthless in her quest for the throne, making Jon Snow realize that she would be completely untrustworthy as a queen in King's Landing.

2 His Second Lover Died In His Arms

Yes, Jon Snow was the one who killed his aunt, lover, and queen in a vulnerable moment. Nonetheless, the audience could see that it took everything from him to get to that point. This was probably the saddest moment ever of the show, and, most definitely, in his life. Getting romantically involved with her proved to be another mistake and reinforced the idea that he was also naive in matters of the heart.

Ironically, he holds his second lover's dead body just like he did with his first one (Ygritte). Jon's two chances of being happy and loved by women he loved back ended up in tragedy.

1 His Fate: Joining The Free Folk

In the end, the murder of Daenerys robbed Jon of his right to the throne of Westeros. As much as viewers really wanted this to happen, having him lead all of Westeros with love, rationality, and care for all, was a power that he despised. Therefore, when Jon was arrested and his fate was decided, he certainly felt more at home with the Free Folk. This was such a sad conclusion to this character's story arc who not only didn't have the recognition he deserved but also went to a place that, as Tyrion said, was intended for "cripples, bastards, and broken things".
