Moana may have come out several years ago but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating what the new Chief of Motunui has been up to. Thankfully, they won't have to speculate for much longer because Disney has announced that Moana is getting her own original Disney+ series in the coming years titled Moana: The Series.
While not much is known about the new show just yet, we do know that it is set to drop on Disney+ in 2023 and that it will most likely be set after the events of the film take place. Now that Moana has been deemed the new Cheif of Motunui she has a lot more responsibility on her hands. Fans are eager to see how this young Wayfinder juggles her new responsibilities with her passion for sailing and the ocean.
10 Moana As Chief of Motunui
At the beginning of Moana, Moana's father, the current Chief of Motunui, was preparing his daughter to one day take over his role. While this was a major achievement for Moana, she couldn't help but feel like it tied her down and stopped her from exploring her connection with the ocean. As fans of the movie know, Moana runs off to return the heart of Te Fiti and eventually returns to Motunui ready to assume Cheif duties.
Fans are excited and hopeful that Moana: The Series will showcase what life is like for Moana now that she's in charge of an entire village. It'll be interesting to see if there are any parallels between her duties as Chief and those of other Disney Princess throughout the franchise.
9 Moana Teaching The People Of Motunui How To Sail
After being scared to leave the island of Motunui for generations, Moana finally convinces her father and the rest of their village to reclaim their Wayfinder routes at the end of the film. Now that the village remembers that Wayfinding is in their blood, fans are hopeful that the series will continue to explore this part of their heritage.
In addition, fans want to see Moana helping the more inexperienced villagers figure out how to navigate. After all, Moana is a master Wayfinder now that she's returned to the island and restored the heart of Te Fiti.
8 Motunui To Flourish
Motunui is more than just Moana's home island, it's the island her ancestors have lived on for generations. Fans of the movie will probably remember that part of the reason Moana left Motunui in search of Maui and Te Fiti was that Motunui's fish supply was starting to crumble and the island was basically dying. Now that Moana has returned the heart, Motunui should be able to start healing.
While it might be fun to see Moana lead her people to a different island, fans are hopeful that Motunui remains the home base for Moana: The Series. After all, Motunui seems to be a beautiful island and fans definitely want to see more of what it has to offer.
7 More Of Pua And Hei Hei
When it comes to Disney Princess films the one thing fans know to expect alongside a Princess is a trusty, adorable animal sidekick. When Moana was first released, fans were under the assumption that Moana was getting two sidekicks: Pua the Pig and Hei Hei the not-so-smart chicken. However, Pua ends up taking a backseat while Hei Hei accompanies Moana on her epic journey.
When Moana: The Series drops on Disney+ fans are hopeful that Pua and Hei Hei will both continue to be a part of Moana's story. Perhaps, she can finally get Pua to like the water and teach Hei Hei that rocks are definitely not food. Plus, these two are sure to bring the funny to the series.
6 Flashbacks With Grandma Tala
It's no secret that Disney has a history of killing off beloved characters in all of their animated films. However, many fans still haven't forgiven them for killing off one of the most genuine and best grandparent figures in Disney history: Grandma Tala. While Grandma Tala needed to pass away to push Moana to leave Motunui, fans are hopeful that we haven't seen the last of her just yet.
Sure, she appears in her stingray spirit to guide Moana in the right direction in the film, but fans are hopeful that she'll return in her human form through flashbacks when Moana: The Series premiers. After all, no one understands Moana better than her late-grandmother.
5 Maui To Make Appearances
While the movie and series may be called Moana, there is no denying that Maui, the epically tattooed Demigod, has become an important part of Moana's story. While he may not have been open to her in the beginning, he certainly came around to Moana and even helped her restore the heart of Ta Fiti after he took it from her generations ago.
While Maui might not be a villager of Motunui, fans certainly hope that he continues to make appearances in Moana: The Series. Perhaps, he can continue to teach Moana how to sail or just be a trusted ally for the young Chief to confide in when things get tough.
4 More Original Songs
A Disney Princess movie is hardly a Disney Princess movie without a killer soundtrack to go along with it, and Moana was no exception. Disney hired Tony Award Winner Lin-Manuel Miranda to help pen the soundtrack and it was one of the best decisions yet. The soundcheck ended up peaking at number 2 on the Billboard charts and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Acadamy Award for Best Original Song.
While there's been no word on if songs will be a part of Moana: The Series, it would simply feel incomplete without musical numbers being included.
3 Pacific Island Culture To Play A Huge Role
Moana is the first Pacific Islander Disney Princess and as such, she has a great deal of pressure on her to represent the culture properly. Disney knew they had to get this story right and so before the writers could start Moana's story, they first traveled to Fiji, Tahiti and Samoa to start their research. Of course, one film can never and should never represent an entire culture, Moana did better than many others.
Now that Moana is getting her own show, the writers will be able to explore more of Moana's unique Pacific Island culture which in turn will be able to educate audiences of all ages on a culture they might not be familiar with.
2 Moana Deepening Her Connection With The Ocean
One of the most unique things about Moana is her connection with the ocean. The movie does an excellent job at establishing her deep connection to it earlier on as fans watch a toddler Moana waddle her way into the ocean and play in the waves with a seashell. Of course, her connection deepens when she starts to sail, and eventually the ocean parts for her when she encounters Te Kā at the climax of the movie.
Now that Moana has begun to truly explore her relationship with the ocean, fans are hopeful that we get to see more of it in the series. What other tricks can the ocean do for Moana? Can she manipulate more than she already has? Does she have magical powers or is it just a spiritual connection?
1 Her Family Supporting Her No Matter What
While Disney films often like to kill off family members they also make sure that most of their movies place a strong emphasis on the importance of family. Moana was no different. Though Moana's dad and her didn't see eye to eye, in the beginning, they ended up realizing that they have to trust one another if they want to see their village prosper.
Fans are hopeful that Moana: The Series continues to place an emphasis on Moana's family and that we get to see them supporting Moana undoubtfully from now on.
