Pokémon UNITE Set To Feature Costumes For Each Character

Little has been revealed regarding Pokémon's upcoming MOBA title Pokémon UNITE, but beta testers have leaked that the game's playable Pokémon will have purchasable costumes they can wear in battle. Traditional MOBAs that are free-to-play offer players in-game cosmetics at a fee, which accounts for most of the game's income, and it seems Pokémon UNITE is no exception to this stereotype.

Pokémon UNITE was revealed in June of last year, and it was not very well received by fans of the franchise. This was partially due to The Pokémon Company holding two separate early-morning Pokémon Direct announcement videos, the second of which was solely focused on Pokémon UNITE. The first Pokémon Direct ended by teasing a bigger reveal for the following morning's update, many of which were hoping for the announcement of Sinnoh remakes. Instead, Pokémon fans were met with what seemed to be a generic MOBA game sporting some of the franchises most favored Pokémon.

According to Pokékalos, a French Pokémon news outlet, Pokémon UNITE has entered its second phase of beta testing in China. This phase has revealed that Scorbunny will be a playable character, but more importantly, each Pokémon can don an assortment of dashing costumes. Screenshots of these costumes were leaked as well including a Lucario costume inspired by the movie Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Other costumes may not have as deep a meaning as Lucario's, but they add a ton of flair to the Pokémon's overall look.

Other leaks from Pokékalos have revealed additional gameplay and currency systems that weren't previously revealed. More Pokémon have also been confirmed to be playable including Cramorant and Crustle. Pokémon will also be able to carry items with different abilities and effects similar to other MOBAs. Much like other mobile games, Pokémon UNITE will offer players daily log-in bonuses such as character trials, currency, and costumes for their Pokémon.

Regardless of the let-down that Pokémon UNITE's initial announcement may have been, it seems to have the potential to be well received once it is officially released. Sure, Pokémon hasn't traditionally subscribed to the MOBA genre of games, but Pokémon UNITE seems as if it could perform well. Plus, who doesn't want to dress their Pikachu in a snapback and hoodie while taking on enemy players?
