Over the years, the ball challenge winners on RuPaul's Drag Race have gotten very far on the show and had fantastic careers later on. The ball is the most traditional maxi challenge on Drag Race, starting all the way back in season 1. Recent seasons of the show have put a much bigger emphasis on challenges that involve acting, singing, dancing, and comedy. But there are plenty of fans that miss when the series focused more on design challenges and forced the queens to put together a brand-new look from scratch.
With that said, Drag Race is a different beast nowadays, so the queens come prepared with plenty of clothes from various top-notch fashion designers. While it is intuitive to think of the Snatch Game as the best forecaster for how the queens will do on a given season, it turns out that the ball challenge is a much more accurate indicator. In the last 12 seasons, every single winner of a ball challenge got to the Top 4 of their respective season. And that is also true for the two winners of ball challenges on All Stars.
BeBe Zahara Benet was the first ball challenge winner on RuPaul's Drag Race - a fitting achievement given that she went on to win season 1. Then, on season 2, the contestant formerly known as Tyra Sanchez won the challenge. Subsequent ball winners are Yara Sofia (season 3 episode 11), Manila Luzon (season 3 episode 13), Sharon Needles (season 4), Alaska (season 5), Adore Delano (season 6), and Violet Chachki (season 7). Other ball challenge winners are Kim Chi (season 8), Shea Coulee (season 9), Aquaria (season 10), Brooke Lynn Hytes (season 11), and Gigi Goode (season 12). Gottmik won the ball challenge on season 13, which is currently on the air. Additional ball challenge winners are BeBe Zahara Benet and Trixie Mattel (All Stars 3) and Miz Cracker (All Stars 5).
Looking at the winners of each Drag Race ball challenge, it stands out that every single one of those queens got to the Top 4 on their respective seasons. There are also five ball winners that went on to win the entire season: BeBe Zahara Benet, the contestant formerly known as Tyra Sanchez, Sharon Needles, Violet Chachki, and Aquaria. However, as far as season 13 goes, it is still too early to tell how far Gottmik will get on the show.
The list of ball challenge winners is a truly fierce selection! There's no denying that Gottmik is in great company.
RuPaul's Drag Race season 13 airs Fridays at 8pm EST on VH1.
