A24's Saint Maud has remained in release limbo for nearly a year in the United States. While it enjoyed a theatrical premiere overseas, it left many viewers left pondering when it would finally grace VOD services or theaters in America. Here's everything we know so far about Saint Maud's release date, cast and characters, and story details.
Saint Maud currently sits at a comfortable 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, marking it as one of the most successful horror movies to come out of 2020. A24 knows good horror, as their filmography that includes Ari Aster's Midsommar and Hereditary as well as Robert Eggers's The Witch has proven. As such, fans familiar with the works attached to the company highly anticipate their upcoming releases in the genre. They are also known for being a key component in debuting the first feature-length works of lesser known filmmakers like Aster and Eggers. Rose Glass was set to make her directorial debut with Saint Maud on April 10, 2020 in the United States, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was postponed alongside numerous other highly anticipated horror movies.
While other production companies opted for VOD releases, limited theatrical premieres, and other means of distributing new content, A24 has remained relatively quiet this year. On the other hand, Blumhouse Productions and even Disney didn't let the pandemic stop them from giving their audiences what they've been waiting for. Now that people overseas were able to witness the miracles and horrors of Saint Maud, it would seem that the United States release date could be right around the corner.
As of this writing, the release of Saint Maud has been delayed three times. Its initial release date was set for April 10, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to postpone in hopes of being able to have a theatrical release. Saint Maud was set to premiere on July 17, 2020, yet another inexplicable delay occurred that caused them to look towards an October date. Once it became evident that a second wave of COVID-19 was just beginning in the United States, they unofficially delayed it a third time without any announcement. However, it did release on October 9, 2020 in the United Kingdom. Based on the lack of success VOD releases have had, it is likely that A24 is holding out to have a successful opening like they had overseas. If the pandemic continues as it is, audiences may have to wait until mid-2021 to see Saint Maud.
Morfydd Clark stars as the titular character Maud, a devout Catholic and palliative care nurse. Jennifer Ehle portrays Amanda, a young dancer from America left in Maud's care. The movie primary focuses on these two characters in particular. Alongside Clark and Ehle are Lily Knight (Joy), Lily Frazer (Carol), Turlough Convery (Christian), Rosie Sansom (Ester), Marcus Hutton (Richard), Noa Bodner (Hilary), and Carl Prekopp (Homeless Pat).
After experiencing a traumatic event as a nurse, Maud turns to a private palliative care center to care for sickly patients. Now a devout catholic, she is confronted with the demons of her past that impact her present that could have horrifying consequences. Everything she tried to leave behind her comes back in the form of hallucinations, demonic possession, and murder. Saint Maud is a psychological horror movie with a lot to offer. Hopefully, its concrete release date will be announced sooner rather than later.
