Garrett Adelstein is a professional poker player who competed in Survivor: Cagayan (season 28) back in 2014. He is the third poker player to participate in the CBS reality competition series, where contestants are selected due to their natural abilities. Those who make the cut try to outwit their fellow castaways.
Garrett Adelstein said in an interview with Poker Listings that he is a Survivor superfan who spent 2,000 hours preparing for all aspects of the game. Before he appeared on Survivor, he practiced the iconic challenges from previous seasons, such as the slide puzzles, and analyzed every episode from the past 27 seasons. He did not go through the traditional application process, ultimately getting discovered by casting agents at a bar.
Because of his background in poker, he was sorted into the Luzon tribe (also known as the "Brains" tribe) in a season of "Brains vs. Beauty vs. Brawn." He was immediately considered (ironically) the weakest member of the tribe by tribemate, David Samson. Adelstein was sent to his camp early and found an individual Immunity Idol. After David was sent home first, the "Brains" tribe lost again and blindsided Garrett, who was voted out second, with an Idol in his pocket. In the six years since Survivor season 28, Garrett has definitely stayed busy.
According to The Hendon Mob Database, the high stakes poker player made over $170,000 in total live earnings after just four games. In 2016, he participated in the 47th World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, ranking 143rd in No Limit Hold'em. He is still a professional poker player, and the Arizona native moved out to California to continue his passion.
He has a long-time girlfriend, realtor Jennifer Stutland. The pair spend most of their time in California and also go to Las Vegas for his poker tournaments. He is frequently seen on the popular webcast, Live at the Bike, hosted at the Bicycle Hotel and Casino, where he plays cash game poker. Garrett is also a common sight at popular poker YouTube channels, such as PokerGO's Poker After Dark. When he's not playing poker, Garrett gives back. He has been part of a volunteer program that helps children for several years. The program is called Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which paired him with a young mentee named Kali. He has posted several pictures of fun trips he took with Kali and thinks that being a part of the program is fulfilling. Adelstein is also an avid runner. Back in March, he was running in the LA Big 5K, where he could combine his love of fitness and philanthropy.
Since Survivor, Garrett has continued playing high stakes poker professionally, has entered a long term relationship, and has become a mentor to a young kid. As a Survivor superfan, he said he still has a love for the game. Fans hope to see more of him in future seasons.
