Warning: SPOILERS for WandaVision Episode 2!
WandaVision episode 2 features a commercial connected to Baron Wolfgang von Strucker and Scarlet Witch's origins in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Elizabeth Olsen reprises her franchise role of Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, for the Disney+ series that also stars Paul Bettany as Vision. Both characters came into focus in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, and have since been major figures in the MCU. WandaVision serves as the launch of Phase 4, and the series is already referencing past events while also building a new future.
Episode 2 of WandaVision remained in black-and-white as the leads continued their life in an idyllic 1960s sitcom setting. To fit in with the town of Westview, Wanda and Vision decided to take part in the local talent show. While Wanda attended a meeting with local women to prepare for the fundraiser, Vision joined a nearby Neighborhood Watch meeting. The pair had planned to perform a magical act during the talent show, but it was slightly derailed when Vision started to malfunction due to a chewing gum mishap. Though the android revealed some of his powers during the performance, Wanda used her own abilities to preserve their secret identities. By the end of the episode, Wanda learned that she was pregnant and their reality shifted forward to the world of color TV.
As was the case with WandaVision's premiere, episode 2 included a special era-appropriate commercial. This particular advertisement focused on a brand of watches. These were no ordinary watches, however; they were revealed to be Strucker watches, which even included a HYDRA logo. This was a direct reference to Wolfgang von Strucker, a former leader of HYDRA and a notable villain within the MCU played by Thomas Kretschmann. Wanda has a dark history with Strucker, as did her twin brother, Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) aka Quicksilver.
Wanda and Pietro grew up in Sokovia, but at the age of ten the twins became orphans when their parents were killed by a mortar shell that hit their home. Blaming Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) for their parents' deaths, the Maximoff twins grew to hate the man, leading to their eventual allegiance to HYDRA. As revealed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier's post-credits scene, Wanda and Pietro volunteered to act as test subjects for experimentation that would result in the acquisition of special powers. Strucker oversaw the experiments using the Mind Stone within Loki's scepter. The twins were the only test subjects to survive Strucker's experiments before emerging as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. The siblings initially joined Ultron in fighting against the Avengers, but they later switched teams when they recognized each side's motives.
A Stark product was the focus of WandaVision's first commercial, so Strucker being referenced in the second episode continues a pattern of the commercials being connected to Wanda's repressed memories. While Tony eventually became an ally, he had a complicated past with Wanda and Pietro. Strucker also had a history with the twins, but his actions were much more sinister in Wanda's mind. If the pair never aligned with HYDRA, Quicksilver may have never died in Age of Ultron. If the commercials in WandaVision continue to hint at Wanda's memories resurfacing, we can expect to see plenty more references to her past.
