Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly confirm Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania begins filming this summer. Following another successful launch in the franchise, Ant-Man 3 was officially announced last year, with Peyton Reed returning to direct. Paul Rudd will once again star as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, with Evangeline Lilly co-leading the film as Hope van Dyne aka Wasp. The sequel will also see Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer return as Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne respectively.
Marvel Studios provided more information on Ant-Man 3 late in 2020, as Disney's Investor Day brought several reveals, including the film's official title: Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. This is where Kevin Feige confirmed Jonathan Majors is playing Kang the Conqueror in the movie and that Kathryn Newton is taking over the role of Cassie Lang. With the main Ant-Man cast returning, a major comic threat like Kang, and Young Avengers setup through Cassie, there is plenty of excitement for the next installment. And even though Marvel hasn't given the film a release date, it turns out that filming begins in just a few months.
In recent days, both Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly have shared what they know about when Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania begins filming. A fan asked Douglas for a status update during a Q&A on Instagram (via Ant-Man News), and he said "To the best of my knowledge, we're going to start filming this year." Over on Lilly's Instagram page, a fan asked her the same question in the comments of one of her posts. Lilly gave a more specific answer and said summer 2021 is the target, and she assured she'll share photos from the set once production starts.
With a summer 2021 target date, Marvel is moving rather quickly on Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The start of production is even more surprising, considering the movie does not have a release date. Marvel is usually able to get a film out in theaters roughly a year after it starts filming. That would put Ant-Man 3 on track for a 2022 release, but there are already four Marvel Cinematic Universe movies on the schedule: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther 2, and Captain Marvel 2.
Unless Marvel pushes one of their 2022 movies to 2023 or decides to increase output again and move to five movies per year, the safe bet is still that Ant-Man 3 won't be released until 2023. The reason for this early start date then could be based on scheduling and a side effect of the COVID-19 delays to Phase 4. Marvel may have originally envisioned the next Ant-Man coming out in 2022. Since the cast features some in-demand actors, it was likely easier for Marvel to keep the original shooting schedule. Regardless, fans can now expect more Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania news to arrive during the summer prior to filming beginning.
