The Russo Brothers have revealed all the family cameos they snuck into Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The 2014 MCU movie was Cap’s second solo movie after 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and its 70s political thriller vibe marked a dramatic and exciting contrast from the original World War Two drama. It also marked the Russos’ first time directing a Marvel movie, and it clearly paid off, with the success of Winter Soldier securing their position as the directors of Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
The Russos’ next film is Cherry, a crime drama that sees the directors once again collaborating with MCU star Tom Holland. Holland plays an army veteran who robs banks to pay for his opioid addiction. Cherry is scheduled to have its theatrical premiere in the US on February 26, 2021 – to promote the film, the Russo Brothers have been posting on Instagram with the hashtag #ClevelandBros in order to celebrate the projects they’ve shot in their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.
Now, they’ve shared some behind-the-scenes footage of Winter Soldier, calling the fight on the freeway one of their “favorite fight sequences while working with Marvel.” They noted how the filming experience was “vastly different” from shooting their first two earlier projects, Pieces and Welcome To Collinwood. As part of the post, the Russos also revealed all of the family members they got to be a part of Winter Soldier by showing clips of scenes and pointing out their cameos. See the full post with all the scenes below:
It’s truly impressive just how many Russo family members made it into Winter Soldier, with the directors' children, parents, nieces, nephews, and siblings being among the extras who now have some pretty cool bragging rights. Joe Russo himself would go on to make a cameo in Avengers: Endgame, although the fanfare over him being the MCU’s first openly-gay character remains controversial.
The Russo Brothers clearly love a Marvel cameo, as it's not just family members that have popped up in many of their MCU projects. Many cast members from the cult sitcom Community have also famously made appearances in Marvel movies – and that all started with Danny Pudi’s cameo as a SHIELD communications officer in Winter Soldier. The Russos served as executive producers and directors of Community for the majority of the show’s run, and the epic paintball finale in Community’s second season is what led the directors to the MCU in the first place.
The Russos are clearly masters at sneaking in clever cameos, whether it’s for those who are part of their Community family or part of their actual family. It remains to be seen whether there are any unexpected cameos in the upcoming Cherry, but for now, fans can enjoy a Captain America: The Winter Soldier rewatch with all these new cameos to spot.
