Genshin Impact's KFC Skin Promotion In China May Be Its Weirdest Yet

A promotional image leaked on Twitter reportedly shows a China-only crossover event between Genshin Impact and Kentucky Fried Chicken. KFC has made a name for itself by pulling off a variety of strange stunts in media and pop culture in the past few years. After starting a Twitter account called KFC Gaming, the fast food chain announced a dating simulator that featured an anime-inspired Colonel Sanders that players could romance. It has also made waves for claiming that it's developing a gaming console, known as the KFConsole, that can both play games and warm chicken. KFC's relationship with gaming is definitely unusual.

KFC has also had more traditional collaborations with gaming companies. Earlier this month, KFC China released a series of promotional Pokémon toys and music boxes with meals to celebrate Lunar New Year and Pokémon's 25th anniversary. This is in line with a US promotion, where Pokémon cards are currently being offered as the toy accompaniment in McDonald's Happy Meals. These kinds of deals work - the Pokémon Happy Meals are selling like hotcakes, and many complained about the fact that the Pokémon music boxes were only available in China. Gaming and fast food seems to be a combination that gets good traction from fans.

KFC is now trying something new in China by offering Genshin Impact-branded chicken buckets and a crossover skin for the game's Wind Glider. Leaked on Twitter by Zeniet (via Massively Overpowered), the promotion features both real-world and virtual items. Players can receive a code that grants a red- and white-striped skin for the Wind Glider that's designed to look like KFC's trademark buckets. Hungry fans can also purchase real-world KFC chicken buckets that feature new art of the character Diluc on the side. The ad features Diluc and Noelle in KFC-themed outfits, but there's no word as to whether these will be available in-game or whether they're just promotional art. According to the date on the ad, the promotion will begin on March 8th. There is no sign that the promotion or its accompanying Wind Glider skin will be available outside of China.

In comparison to the strange stunts that KFC has pulled in the past, this promotion seems fairly innocuous. While it's disappointing that the Wind Glider skin and the Diluc wing bucket will likely never come to the US, the promo's location makes sense - developer miHoYo is based in Shanghai, China.

The worldwide outpouring of fan support for crossovers like these will hopefully prompt more in the future; with the current popularity and meme status of KFC Gaming, it seems fairly likely. Fans shouldn't despair if they can't get these particular items, as more are sure to come in the future. Genshin Impact fans in China should consider themselves lucky to be able to take part in such a charming promotion.
