Not all of the storylines in the Harry Potter series were as vastly popular as the franchise overall. Some plotlines didn’t land well with book readers who felt these didn’t have good resolutions or treated certain characters the wrong way without them getting anything out of it.
Now that the probability of a TV series is very likely, the show will first have to avoid a number of mistakes from the franchise and to rule out adapting the stories that most didn’t enjoy. Leaving these out will also be beneficial since the plotlines that were popular can be expanded upon.
10 James Potter's Bullying Ways
There were many ways James Potter became worse and worse, with his bullying basically being his main attribute as a teenager. This is to the point where James’ stories were connected to others purely based on his bullying.
The TV series should avoid this since there was no resolution to this, as Snape’s gripe with James actually was valid since the latter never apologized to him for humiliating him all the time. His bullying was an arc that was opened but didn’t get a conclusion, which wouldn’t match up well in an episodic format.
9 Harry And Ron Cutting Their Friendship With Hermione
While Harry and Ron usually place well among the most likable Gryffindors, they were quite the opposite in Prisoner of Azkaban. This storyline involved the two cutting their friendship with Hermione due to her reporting the Firebolt -- which had been suspiciously sent to Harry -- and her cat seemingly eating Scabbers.
Harry and Ron didn’t come out looking too good in this story, as Hermione was left feeling hurt and abandoned, with neither of the boys doing anything to reconcile with her either. With the extended runtime a TV series provides, the two will look like bigger jerks more than anything else.
8 Cho's Jealousy Of Hermione
The break-up between Harry and Cho wasn’t exactly the most heartbreaking separation, as the two had so many misunderstandings by that point that it was better to separate. What wasn’t well executed was the angle of Cho being jealous of Hermione, as this wasn’t believable to readers (who saw things from Harry’s point of view).
Since Harry never showed interest in Hermione, the story just doesn’t have the kind of momentum needed to be a valid adaptation. Not to mention that it felt like a lazy way to cause problems between Harry and Cho, so it’s not likely to come across well in the TV series either.
7 Ron And Hermione's Pettiness During Their Estrangement
Ron and Hermione’s estrangement in Half-Blood Prince itself wasn’t too bad, but the subplot of them being needlessly mean to each other hasn’t been met with great reception. That’s because the two became far too petty, with Hermione outright assaulting Ron with enchanted birds and Ron making fun of her in front of others.
What many don’t like about this angle is how Lavender was made to look like the bad guy when, in reality, she was basically being used to make Hermione jealous and didn’t deserve the latter’s hate either. This kind of petty acts of vengeance is going to look even more juvenile in a TV adaptation.
6 The Shaming Of Moaning Myrtle
A recurring plot point was characters making fun of Moaning Myrtle. This story hasn’t aged well since many have noted that Myrtle was a poor victim of bullying, whom nobody cared to provide a shoulder to cry on.
There’s also the fact that Myrtle didn’t get any kind of ending, as the last she was seen was her failed attempts to console Draco Malfoy, for which Ron made fun of her. Adding this story to the TV series will only increase the disdain toward Myrtle’s unfair treatment so it’s better to leave it out.
5 Snape's Bullying Of Neville
It’s fair to say that Neville being portrayed as a "loser" for the first half of the series helped in showing just how much he had grown by the end when he became a brave leader. However, Snape’s bullying of him doesn’t benefit either of the characters.
This is due to the storyline being phased out, as Snape’s bullying simply stopped being mentioned but was implied to have continued. Since Neville was never shown standing up to Snape and the latter never showed remorse for what he did, there’s no point in adapting the injustice Neville had to experience.
4 Harry's Sudden Love And Obsession For Ginny
A lot of the criticism of this storyline comes down to Harry's obsessiveness with Ginny, which many fans thought was rather uncomfortable to follow.
Basically, all of this storyline featured Harry stealing glances at Ginny and feeling glad whenever Dean -- Ginny’s boyfriend at the time -- faced some kind of bad luck. With this attraction also coming out of nowhere, the TV series would do better by taking an organic approach, where Harry and Ginny form a genuine connection that blossoms into love.
3 Hufflepuffs Antagonizing Harry
Although it might not seem like it, there are many reasons why Hufflepuff might be the worst House. One of these was due to their tendency to turn on Harry very easily, with Chamber of Secrets showing the likes of Ernie MacMillan and his gang openly calling him the Heir of Slytherin while telling others he was attacking the students.
The Hufflepuffs also antagonized Harry in Goblet of Fire when they thought he stole Cedric’s thunder, which is another storyline that doesn’t paint them in a positive light. Since Harry didn’t end up being close to any Hufflepuff, adapting this storyline will only bring down the value of Hufflepuff House without being a useful plot point to begin with.
2 The Weasleys' Treatment Of Fleur
This story brought out the worst of Mrs. Weasley, Ginny, and even Hermione, as they began treating Fleur very badly for no apparent reason. Their belief was that she wasn’t right for Bill, yet there wasn’t any real reason given for this to be a valid thought.
This plotline was deemed needless by the movie adaptation, which is what the TV series should do as well since it didn’t amount to anything by Deathly Hallows. Removing it will also free time for other subplots that were better received.
1 The Entirety Of Cursed Child
It’s unlikely that the TV series will go into the future, but any kind of adaptation of Cursed Child doesn’t sound like a good idea. Albus Severus hasn’t had the best reception, and the possibility of him having a main role in the TV series will steal focus from the rest of the characters.
Stuff like Voldemort having a secret child and the whole convoluted scenario of the Time-Turners just won’t match well with other storylines, so it’s best to leave it out and also avoid the ire of the portion of the fanbase who didn’t like Cursed Child.
