Today marks the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda's release on the Famicom in Japan and fans all over Twitter are celebrating it. Link’s first adventure made its way over to the United States when it released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987. Since then the game has been ported to several different Nintendo consoles and handhelds over time and there have been 18 sequels. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the series’ most recent mainline game, coming out for the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch in 2017.
Aside from mainline entries to the series, there have been several spinoff titles and adaptations of the series. Most recently, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a spinoff of Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors franchise and prequel to Breath of the Wild pitted Link and the Champions of Hyrule in one versus 1,000 battles against the forces of Calamity Ganon. In a Nintendo Direct that took place on February 17, the producer of the Zelda series, Eiji Aounuma, announced an HD remaster of 2011’s Skyward Sword for the Switch. Aounuma also promised that there would be more information about the Breath of the Wild sequel later this year.
Cosplayers, visual artists, and fans of all kinds have been tweeting about The Legend of Zelda to commemorate the series’ 35th anniversary. Twitter user Shellanin posted pictures of her cosplay as Zelda from Breath of the Wild, complete with her very own Sheikah Slate. Emilie (kyootiwepaints) drew a heartfelt picture of Zelda from the original NES game meeting the Zelda from Breath of the Wild. Many people posted about their hopes for how Nintendo celebrates the anniversary, mostly with what games they hope get rereleased.
People in the games industry, and even some celebrities, were also excited. Trudi Castle, a lead artist on the Darkest Dungeon series, shared pictures she drew of a younger Link traveling through a forest meeting Koroks, encountering Wisps, and coming across snowmen. These pictures feel like they were ripped out of a storybook (which is an excellent idea if anyone at Nintendo is reading). Voice actor Chris Hackney, known for his role as Dimitri in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, shared a picture of his wedding band which has “It’s dangerous to go alone,” inscribed on the inside of the ring in a Hylian font. Even Zelda Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams, joked that Twitter was four years too early for her 35th birthday.
The Legend of Zelda is a series that means a lot to gamers and to the video game industry as a whole. Many fans were disappointed that more Zelda news wasn’t shown at last week’s Nintendo Direct, so it’s nice to see the attitude around the series change online. Fans shouldn’t give up hope for more Zelda this year. Last year was Mario’s 35th anniversary and Nintendo really didn’t start celebrating it until September, so there’s plenty of time for more Zelda goodness.
