The Mandalorian is reportedly expected to recast the character of Cara Dune after last week's firing of Gina Carano. Disney's first live-action Star Wars television series premiered on Disney+ in November 2019 and quickly became a fan favorite. In telling the simple story of a lone bounty hunter who comes to care for a powerful child, The Mandalorian won over fans old and new and miraculously managed to avoid the divisive responses that dogged the studio's Star Wars movies. However, the past week has shown that behind the scenes, not everything is quite as smooth.
Last Wednesday, Lucasfilm announced actress and former MMA fighter Gina Carano had been let go from The Mandalorian and other Star Wars projects. Carano had been a controversial figure for some time, as on social media she shared posts that many found to be transphobic and anti-Semitic. Ever since The Mandalorian season 1, Carano had played Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune, one of the show's biggest recurring players. However, following Carano's ouster, the character's future remains uncertain.
According to a new report from THR, insiders with knowledge of the situation at Lucasfilm expect The Mandalorian's Cara to be recast in the future. She wasn't slated to appear in the next Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett, but for story and merchandising purposes, she will be recast with a new actress. No timeline for this was given, though one might guess it could be before The Mandalorian season 3 begins filming.
Many fans already expected Cara to get recast for The Mandalorian, particularly since she was expected to receive her own Star Wars spin-off. On the merchandising side, Hasbro announced they cancelled their Cara Dune action figure, so Lucasfilm must wish to make up for that lost revenue. It's clear Lucasfilm has big plans for Cara, and as she isn't The Mandalorian's main character, it won't be quite as tricky to fit someone into Carano's place. As with Carano's actual firing, this will likely spark outrage from those who disagreed with Lucasfilm's decision; meanwhile, those who advocated for the studio to drop Carano will be thrilled.
Now all that's left to do is speculate about who could step into Cara's shoes. A popular pick among the fanbase is Lucy Lawless, who many put forward last week as a viable contender. Other names have been thrown around, including Once Upon a Time actress Lana Parrilla. As for who Lucasfilm will actually pick, that remains to be seen. The Mandalorian isn't expected to begin production for a few more months, so there's still some time before a replacement needs to be found (provided Cara actually is involved with the third season). Until Lucasfilm announces their choice, fans can speculate and suggest actresses to their heart's content.
