As if the pandemic wasn't reason enough to stay inside, a trailer for Ryan Reynolds' new Snapchat show Ryan Doesn't Know warns that the unhinged actor is armed with a chainsaw and at large somewhere outdoors. Reynolds is currently working on Deadpool 3 along with a variety of other movies including The Adam Project, an adaptation of the board game Clue, and a musical version of A Christmas Carol.
Reynolds rose to prominence playing a charming manchild in National Lampoon's Van Wilder and has since found fame starring in action blockbusters like Deadpool and Green Lantern. Despite a track record playing leading men, the Canadian actor's mischievous sense of humor often sneaks into his performances. That sense of humor has infused other projects as Reynolds has expanded his professional hyphenate to include producer, director, and businessman. For instance, when the internet collectively mocked a Peloton ad featuring an actress who appeared to be dead inside, Reynolds cast the same actress in a commercial for his brand Aviation Gin. Reynolds is particularly well versed in social media and meme humor for someone of his celebrity: he recently nailed a contribution to the Bernie Sanders meme and is involved in a number of ongoing fake feuds with Hugh Jackman, Betty White, and occasionally his wife Blake Lively.
This time, Reynolds may have taken the joke too far. In a YouTube trailer for his upcoming Snapchat show, the seemingly good-natured actor maniacally wields a chainsaw as he gazes into his webcam with the eyes of a man who's finally gone over the edge. The series of minisodes is called Ryan Doesn’t Know and features the actor and self-proclaimed "stuff learner" trying his hand at various tasks he has no experience with or business getting involved in. In the video, the always-self-aware Reynolds warns that "the last thing you should ever give a SAG-certified actor is a chainsaw" before proceeding to hack away with abandon while cackling like a madman. Watch the trailer below, and beware that this man is currently on the loose:
In the series, Reynolds will attempt to virtually learn various skills from the relative safety of his home "in the hopes of becoming a less boring husband and father." Experts will try their best to school Reynolds in their respective fields, among them the ice sculptor Shintaro Okamoto and the world-class weight lifter Ulisses World. The 12-episode Snapchat project was produced by Westbrook Media, a company partially owned by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. This is Westbrook's third project for Snapchat following the quarantine reality show Will From Home and a series in which Jaden Smith collaborates with activists on social issues. Ryan Doesn’t Know premiered on January 28, and you can watch on Snapchat now. New episodes will be released every other day.
Reynolds' project is the latest in what's sure to be an onslaught of COVID-inspired programming. Scripted shows like Love in the Time of Corona and Social Distance were among the first to write stories that take place during quarantine. Unscripted shows like Reynolds' have been even more abundant, especially on social media as filming restrictions have forced filmmakers to get creative. This circumstance has sped up an existing trend of established actors and directors releasing series on the same platforms that amateur content creators are using. A Snapchat series may seem like a strange choice for a successful actor like Reynolds, but Ryan Doesn’t Know is likely one of many social media projects to come that will star well-known public figures. One can only hope Reynolds' learning experience won't inspire any other actors to pick up a chainsaw.
