If a Plastic Man movie ever does get off the ground, Ben Schwartz remains interested in playing the titular DC superhero. Schwartz is already tied to another major franchise, albeit one more focused on video games, as he voiced the main character in 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog (and will do so in the 2022 sequel as well). Still, the superhero world continues to draw Schwartz in, with Plastic Man being the main object of his affection.
Schwartz has been expressing his interest in playing Plastic Man for years now. He has tweeted about the possibility of playing the role and was even subject to some impressive fan art that depicted the comedian as the humorous superhero. No live-action film has come together to bring Plastic Man to the silver screen, however, leaving Schwartz's notable campaign for the role languishing in the same developmental straits as the character itself.
Nevertheless, Schwartz remains interested in suiting up as Plastic Man. In comments made to Nerdist, Schwartz reminded his fans that he has always wanted to play the character, before admitting that is still interested in the role. Schwartz even claimed that he had a pitch for a potential Plastic Man movie, but never ended up getting a chance to write it. See Schwartz's full comments about his Plastic Man dreams below:
I really wanted to play Plastic Man. I had a pitch, I had an idea for that movie. We didn’t end up writing it, but I would still love to play Plastic Man. I love the idea that there’s this thief type character, and he gets superpowers and then maybe he doesn’t want to use them for good because he was a thief to begin with, Eel O’Brian. So I really love that. I saw the comedy in that and there’s a cartoon series that was very comedic too so you can see where it plays.
Plastic Man isn't the only superhero role Schwartz is interested in, though another big one for him is across the comic book divide. "When I was younger, I would have loved to play Spider-Man cause I’m a Jewish kid from New York and Spider-Man was from New York," Schwartz said of Peter Parker; that possibility exists now more than ever, as the multiverse appears to be on the rise at Marvel. He also expressed an old interest in playing Slapstick, another character from Marvel Comics.
Schwartz isn't the only comedian to express interest in the role of Plastic Man, with Marlon Wayans previously throwing his hat in the ring. Perhaps it could happen one day, as a movie centered around the character has been in development for some time at DC. It may be difficult for Schwartz to play the lead, however, as the character is being taken in a new direction, with the movie expected to have a female-led narrative. For now, Schwartz can next be seen in Flora & Ulysses, a family superhero comedy debuting on Disney+. Maybe one day Ben Schwartz will get to live out his dream of starring in a Plastic Man movie.
