Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey become Joel and Ellie in new pieces of The Last of Us fan art. Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is considered one of the best video games of the past decade. This is thanks in large part to its central relationship and story; following a hardened smuggler and a teenage girl who travel the country in hope of helping to cure a global infection. The IP’s popularity not only prompted a sequel but years of talk regarding a live-action adaptation. Leading up to the release of The Last of Us Part II last year, HBO confirmed Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin was developing a series.
Fan-casting of The Last of Us’ beloved duo has been commonplace ever since 2013. For example, names like Hugh Jackman and Kaitlyn Dever have been thrown to play Joel and Ellie. Mahershala Ali was even rumored to be in the running for Joel; however, recent casting announcements of Game Of Thrones’ Ramsey and The Mandalorian’s Pascal have pretty much debunked any speculation. Regardless, given how much fans loved Ramsey as Lyanna Mormont and Pascal as Din Djarin (among other things), viewers seem pretty satisfied with the selections.
In response to the casting news, artists (britedit, Spdrmnkyxxiii, Mizuriau, Arjun, Taryn Platt, and Apexform) have posted fan art/posters to Instagram featuring Pascal and Ramsey as The Last of Us’ protagonists. Most of the pieces are an extrapolation of Sony/Naughty Dog imagery, employing the clothing Joel and Ellie wore in that first game. BossLogic, on the other hand, decided to have fun with Pascal’s proclivity to play reluctant father figures. Check those out below.
After Ramsey’s involvement was announced, many took it as a sign that fellow Game of Thrones’ alum Nikolaj Coster-Waldau might be in the running for Joel (another popular fan cast). Given Pascal’s demand and the fact that he’s still headlining The Mandalorian, the news that he’d be playing the lead in another show was surprising. Fan-casting in general tends to focus on performers who look like the characters in question. While Pascal and Ramsey don’t resemble their video game characters as much as Coster-Waldau, Jackman, and Dever, they certainly possess the acting chops to portray what is arguably one of the most gripping father/daughter dynamics depicted across any medium.
Voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson did an incredible job bringing Joel and Ellie to life. One of the reasons The Last of Us Part II was so divisive is because players feel so connected to those characters and have strong opinions about how they should be handled—expectations that will do doubt carry over into HBO’s series. That said, video game adaptations are notoriously difficult to get right. As evident by Netflix's The Witcher, an episodic take on The Last of Us’ story will give the series time to introduce new characters and storylines while still honoring what made the game great. Also, it will help Pascal and Ramsey define their versions of Joel and Ellie, creating something other than an imitation of the fan art above.
