Sega announced earlier today that underrated Yakuza spin-off game Judgment is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Google Stadia later this year. Judgment, from developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, first released in 2019 in the West, and followed a story that revolved around a slightly darker narrative than the Yakuza series, featuring a slowly-unraveling story of murder, mystery, and the nature of Kamurocho's criminal underground.
With the Yakuza series experiencing a surge in popularity in the West thanks to the success of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's past work is now getting re-examined by new fans who are just becoming familiar with the developer's projects. Judgment's release and reception is interesting and was colored at least in part because of the video game's Japanese voice actor scandal, though that story threatened to over-shadow a title that ended up scoring favorably among reviewers. Noted for its tone and compelling story, Judgment broke the mold and explored Yakuza's locale of Kamurocho in a new light, which makes it especially compelling for anyone who is familiar with that franchise's long-running narrative.
Now, newly converted fans of Yakuza will get a chance to experience Judgment on newer, more powerful platforms. Sega announced today that Judgment will be getting a PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Stadia release on April 23, 2021. According to Sega, Judgment will be able to take advantage of the newer hardware to provide a better playing experience for consumers, including smooth 60fps visuals, the improved loading times that current-gen ports are already becoming known for, and the addition of all previously released DLC.
Judgment will arrive on its new platforms with an appealing price tag of $39.99 USD, which should give it a chance to capitalize on Yakuza: Like a Dragon's successful forays into Western gaming. While the style of game is remarkably different for titles that take place within the same universe, Judgment's combination of slick, stylized combat and captivating characters will be familiar to those who have played a Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio game previously.
While the graphical improvements and loading time upgrades are nice, the best part of the Judgment port for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Stadia is that it simply offers another chance for many to actually play the game. Judgment felt like an underrated game at release and time hasn't changed that sentiment despite strong critical performance, so another change in the spotlight - and looking better while being underneath it - should give Judgment another shot at establishing itself as a great game in its own right.
Judgment is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Google Stadia on April 23, 2021.
