Before appearing on 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days, "Big Ed" Brown was unknown. However, the American father skyrocketed to fame overnight when his romance with Rosemarie Vega first aired on TLC. The 90 Day Fiancé franchise star quickly became a viral meme that made him recognized worldwide. The reality star opened up in a Screen Rant exclusive interview about what it was like to have his life change overnight.
Big Ed said he knew from a young age that he would be famous, but he had no idea how he would become well-known. The 55-year-old could have never guessed that at age 54, his entire life would change by appearing on a reality television show. Becoming a reality star has thrust his life into the spotlight and changed everything for him. While his public platform has brought criticism, body-shaming and bullying, the reality star shared that he would change nothing about his rise to fame due to the many positive changes it has given him and his life.
90 Day Fiancé: Big Ed Reveals New Info About Relationship With Rose
Though it's been a year-and-a-half since he shot to fame, Big Ed still finds the reality to be surreal. "It was incredible," he said. "I actually fell in love with Rose. I met her on social media. I bought a ticket and I posted that on Facebook and my buddy Richard who’s on the show sent me the link. I’d never heard of 90 Day Fiancé and I filled out the link. I filled it out like it was a lotto ticket. The next thing you know I’m on this reality show and I’m in the Philippines." He explained that he initially thought that the application was "a waste of time" because no one would watch it. However, everything changed in January 2020 when the season premiered.
"Overnight, like literally overnight, people would stop me on my Vespa," he marveled. "I couldn’t even walk down the street or an airport without being berated. You know I love it too. I wouldn’t change anything although it’s changed my life in every facet. I kind of like where I’m at. It feels good." Though Big Ed has been shamed for his medical condition, he stated that he learned to accept himself and remain positive. The aspect of fame that the reality star enjoys most of all is the ability to connect with others.
”I went viral on TikTok believe it or not so every 8 year old who’s on TikTok knows who Big Ed is," he said. "It’s so funny to see the expression on their face. They’ll stop in their tracks their eyes will get as big as the moon and they’ll look like ‘omg are you that guy? Are you the TikTok guy? Are you the meme guy?' It’s an opportunity for me to inspire that person which makes me feel really good." He added that all of the negativity he receives is combatted by the positivity of inspiring people. Being able to inspire people, especially children, makes it all worth it to him.
"When the show first came out, I would read all the negative comments," he said. "At one point I didn’t even want to get out of bed." Though he initially grappled with worries over getting fired, he quickly realized his newfound fame had signaled a permanent career change. “It’s crazy how famous I’ve become. I’m just a normal guy there’s nothing really special about me to be quite honest," he admitted. "Although I’m pretty funny.” He added that he is now number one in the world on Cameo and also has over 12 million views on TikTok with 1.1 million followers.
"What’s so funny is I was dancing on pool tables in a Nacho Libre costume 12 years ago with Richard and now I do it on international TV and I get paid for it. It’s kind of a full-circle thing," he marveled. Though the 55-year-old draws polarizing responses among fans, he has continued within the 90 Day Fiancé franchise to be one of its highest-profile personalities. Big Ed is currently seeking a life partner on the Discovery+ spin-off show 90 Day: The Single Life. Fans can follow his journey for love as he once again searches for the one.
90 Day Fiancé airs Sundays at 8pm EST on TLC.
