Jackass 4 Updates: Release Date, Cast & Story Details

Jackass 4, another entry in the franchise about grown men risking life and limb to pull off crazy stunts, is on the way, and here's what we know. One of the things the 2000s became well-known for in popular culture was the rise of reality shows and other unscripted programming to the top of the ratings charts. Sure, such programs had existed previously, but hot properties like Survivor and American Idol changed the TV landscape. While not a competition show like them, MTV's Jackass had a similar purpose, allowing MTV to gain huge viewership for relatively little cost.

Led by Johnny Knoxville, who's since branched out into acting in movies and shows, Jackass became a phenomenon, running from 2000 to 2003. It also influenced a generation of fame-hungry young people to try and gain similar attention via doing dangerous things, despite a disclaimer that ran before each episode. Jackass became so big that it spawned multiple spinoffs starring its various cast members, and a trilogy of theatrical movies in 2002, 2006, and 2010.

With fixtures like Johnny, Steve-O and Chris Pontius now all pushing 50-years-old, one might think the days of new Jackass content would be over. However, that's not the case, as most of the regular gang is set to return later this year for Jackass 4. Here's what fans can expect.

Rumblings of a Jackass 4 began in 2018, and Johnny Knoxville revealed that ideas had already been worked on for the potential sequel. Jackass 4 was originally set for release by Paramount on March 5, 2021, but that was a few months before the Coronavirus pandemic shook up Hollywood, leading the sequel to be delayed until July 2. However, by summer 2020, Jackass 4 had been delayed again, to its current release date of September 3, 2021.

Jackass co-creator Jeff Tremaine is back to direct Jackass 4, while he and fellow co-creators Johnny Knoxville and Spike Jonze once again serve as writers, or more accurately designers of the various pranks and stunts to be performed. As for the casting, longtime Jackass fans will find that most of their favorites are present and accounted for, but not quite everyone. Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Jason "Wee Man" Acuna, Preston Lacy, and Ehren McGhehey are all set to return. Ryan Dunn sadly died in a car crash in 2011 at the age of 34. Surprisingly absent though will be Bam Margera, who was revealed to have been kicked off the film due to reported issues with on-set behavior and maintaining his sobriety. Bam later hinted he might be back in the fold, but Paramount has yet to address the matter officially.

So far, there's been little information released on the particular stunts and pranks that will make up Jackass 4. This is likely due to Knoxville and company wanting to surprise fans, but thanks to a previous admission by Bam on social media, we do know that shortly after filming commenced in December 2020, Knoxville and Steve-O were hospitalized with injuries related to a stunt. According to Bam, Knoxville and Steve-O were jumping on a treadmill running at full speed, while carrying tubas. Clearly, age hasn't mellowed the Jackass gang.
