Oscar-winner Jared Leto’s major transformation for his upcoming role in Ridley Scott’s biographical crime story House of Gucci has been revealed in new set photos. Leto joins acclaimed stars Adam Driver and Lady Gaga in the anticipated film, which is currently filming in Italy and officially set for a November 2021 release date.
The film marks Scott’s return to Italy, where his last feature was set – 2017’s Oscar-nominated All the Money in the World. This time, however, Scott has chosen to focus on the case of Gucci fashion house head Maurizio Gucci, who was murdered in 1995. Gucci’s death was orchestrated by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, who was sentenced to 29 years in prison for hiring Gucci’s assassin. Reggiani ended up serving 18 of those 29 years, ultimately being released in 2016 for good behavior. The upcoming Scott film has a very strong cast in place, with a recent set photo providing a glimpse at Driver as Maurizio and Lady Gaga as Reggiani. Also onboard the project is Jared Leto, as well as screen legends Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino.
Thanks to E! Online, the latest image from the set of House of Gucci has arrived, and this time the world has been treated to a first look at Leto’s stunning transformation. The Suicide Squad star has taken on the role of Paolo Gucci, Maurizio's cousin and the former vice-president and managing director of Gucci Shops Inc and Gucci Parfums of America. Born in 1931, Paolo passed away in 199 at the age of 64 - just months after Maurizio was murdered - meaning the 49-year-old Leto has some aging to do. As can be seen in the recent photos, he’s handled that transformation with incredible accuracy.

Despite the fact that nothing aside from the photos of Driver, Gaga, and Leto have been seen of the film, House of Gucci is already shaping up to make a significant impact. Leto’s ability to alter his appearance and mannerisms has played a significant role in his acclaim as an actor, with his Oscar-winning turn as Rayon in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club seeing him drop 30 pounds. In more recent years, his take on famed comic book villain the Joker has been both a source of praise and criticism from Suicide Squad fans. With House of Gucci, Leto has not only become completely unrecognizable, but fans are likely extremely curious to see just what he’ll be like as a senior citizen.
If there’s one potential issue with House of Gucci, it could be that none of the people who are playing the Gucci family are actually Italian. This shouldn’t cause much stress for fans of the talented cast members, all of whom are well equipped to take on such a challenge. However, the murder of Maurizio was major news in Italy when it occurred and for those who feel that the high-end fashion label is a part of Italian culture, a retelling of the Gucci family’s tragedy without an Italian cast could be problematic.
