A new trailer has dropped for the upcoming 3v3 dodgeball game, Knockout City, showing off new gameplay and a glimpse at customization options. From Velan Studios, Knockout City is the second game to come out of the studio and published by EA Originals. Founded in 2016, EA Originals have been publishing original IPs from smaller independent studios. Velan’s sophomore title is the eighth title from the publisher, following the release of It Takes Two on March 26.
Knockout City is a unique, over-the-top take on dodgeball. Players can knock out opposing teams by slinging dodgeballs to win fast-paced multiplayer matches. Several types of balls are available to choose from, offering unique ways to take out opponents. Additionally, players have varieties of throws to make some genuinely innovative plays during a match, including the ability to throw each other as the ball. Utilizing the different ways to attack and knock out the other team is the game’s selling point.
EA dropped the new gameplay trailer on its EA Originals YouTube channel. In the trailer, skills that players can use during matches were shown off. This trailer also gives a peek at the customization options that players can choose from for their characters. Outfits, heads, and makeup are just some of the collectible customizable items that were shown. Additionally, players can create crews, the name for clans that friends can join online. Crews have customizable vehicle skins that give a personal flair to the team when arriving at matches.
A cross-play beta is currently planned for Knockout City on April 2 through April 4, letting people try out the game before it launches. The beta will allow players on multiple platforms to face each other in new 3v3 and 1v1 playlists. 1v1 is a new game mode added since the first beta in March. A free trial will launch the same day the full game releases. Similar to the Outriders demo, players will be able to transfer their save data from the demo to the full game if they decide to buy it. Those that do so will be rewarded with unique cosmetics.
Knockout City looks to usher in a new genre of competitive sports game that. Like Rocket League, the game offers a unique spin on a sport and runs with it. The ability to become the ball and used as a weapon is sure to bring fun and memorable moments that players can’t get anywhere else. After launch, how well the game does after launch is the true test, as Rocket Arena, another EA Originals title, did not fare too well.
Knockout City releases May 21, 2021, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
