Lord Of The Rings: 10 Moments That Prove Sam & Frodo Are Actually Soulmates

The relationship between Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee is one of the most important in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Without the assistance of Sam, Frodo would definitely not have made it all the way to Mount Doom, and the One Ring would not have been destroyed.

So, while their relationship is vital to the plot, it’s also important on a personal level between the two of them. Many fans view their relationship as possibly more romantic while others see them as very close platonic friends. Either way, their relationship can be very meaningful, and they can be viewed as soulmates whether they had romantic feelings for one another or not.

10 They Were Friends Before The Fellowship

While Frodo and Sam weren’t as close before they went on the harrowing quest together, they did know each other and were friends. While Sam did work for Frodo as a gardener, they were also on good terms outside of that relationship. In fact, Frodo even encouraged Sam to dance with Rosie Cotton, and it’s clear they had a good time together at Bilbo’s birthday party.

9 Sam Was Willing To Follow Frodo The Ends Of The Earth

Sam is really one of the most heroic characters in the series, and it’s not in the traditional ways one might think of a hero. One of his biggest strengths is that he’s so loyal, and he’s willing to go with Frodo to Mordor no matter what. Despite not having left the Shire before, he agrees to go with him to Bree, and then, at the Council of Elrond, he joins the Fellowship of the Ring.

8 The Parallels Between Them Saving One Another

While Sam is often the one looking out for and saving Frodo because Frodo is the Ring Bearer, Frodo does care about Sam, too. Of course, he doesn’t just let Sam drown at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, and he rescues him from the water.

Then, there is a parallel moment to that scene when Sam saves Frodo from falling into the pits of Mount Doom. The cinematography is quite similar as they both grasp one another’s hand and pull the other up.

7 Sam trying to protect Frodo from Gollum

While Frodo and Sam mostly get along well despite being in rather depressing conditions as they approach Mordor, things change drastically when Gollum enters the picture. Frodo has a complicated relationship with Gollum because he wants to believe he can be saved, but Sam never trusts Gollum. This does cause strife between the two of them, but the way Sam is always trying to protect Frodo and have his best interests is very endearing.

6 Frodo’s Speech About Not Getting Far Without Sam

One of the best monologues in the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy is at the end of The Two Towers when Sam talks about being in the great stories and then again, he wonders aloud to Frodo if they will ever be put into grand tales. Frodo responds by saying, “Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam.” It’s a heartwarming moment that shows Frodo is aware of how much he needs Sam.

5 Sam’s “I don’t mean to” Speech

There are many emotional moments between these two in the series, and one of the most notable happens at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. While Frodo believes he has to make the rest of the trek alone because he knows the Ring will corrupt others like it did Boromir, there’s no way Sam is going to let him go by himself.

He starts to swim out to Frodo, even though he doesn’t know how, and Frodo then saves him from the water. He tells Frodo that he promised Gandalf to look out for Frodo and not leave him. This scene shows Sam’s loyalty, but it also shows the trust Frodo has in Sam because he’s the only person Frodo believes won’t be tempted by the Ring.

4 When Frodo Said Goodbye To Sam

Another heartbreaking moment between these two is when Frodo decides to leave Middle-Earth and sail with Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, and Celeborn to the Grey Havens. Frodo is significantly traumatized by the things he’s been through, but the most difficult thing is for him to say goodbye to Sam. Their bond is clearly strong, and, on the other hand, it’s also a bit of a gift to Sam as Frodo wants him to be able to live a life not “torn in two.”

3 Their “Last” Moments After The Ring Was Destroyed

While we know that Frodo and Sam don’t actually die from the volcanic eruptions of Mount Doom, these two think they are going to die. They embrace one another and talk about the things they miss about the Shire. It’s a super compelling and emotional scene, and it’s clear here how much these two have been through together. They really are all the other has left after so much sorrow along the way.

2 "I Can't Carry It For You... But I Can Carry You"

Sam is a stalwart and reliable person, and his strength of heart can’t really be overestimated. As Frodo is suffering from the weight of the Ring, Sam is the one helping him make it to that final leg of the marathon. He can’t carry the Ring, but he does the next best thing. It’s because of his strength, despite also being hungry and thirsty, that Frodo makes it all the way up and is able to finish the quest. It's also one of Sam's best quotes from the series.

1 Sam Joining Frodo In The Grey Havens

While this doesn’t happen in the movies because the films don’t cover everything included in the appendices, it is worth including here because it’s definitely a soulmate situation. After Sam lives a long, happy life with Rosie and they see their children grow, Rosie dies in her old age. Sam is then able to go to Valinor, basically heaven for elves, because he was at one time a Ring Bearer. This means that Frodo and Sam actually do get to reunite.
