Marriage or Mortgage: 5 Couples Who Should Have Picked Mortgage (& 5 Vice Versa)

Sarah Miller is a wedding planner, and Nichole Holmes is a realtor. These women are the Hilary and David of Netflix, but they are much more cordial with each other than the Love It or List It hosts. Couples can either go with Sarah's plan and craft a fabulous wedding day, or they can go with Nichole's best option for a family home.

It's not easy to make such a big decision and either put a wedding or a house on hold. Some of the couples on Marriage or Mortgage make the best choices for where they are in life, but others should have reconsidered.

10 Married: Alex & Precious

Alex and Precious have a lot to think about, and Sarah and Nichole pull out all the stops to try to influence their decision. After learning that Precious has fertility issues but wants to be a mother, Nichole includes a nursery in one of the house choices. This makes Precious very emotional and was a bit much for Nichole to present to her. Sarah keeps it a little more lighthearted and fills the wedding plans with all of Alex and Precious's favorite things. Cigars in Alex's dad's name are a thoughtful memorial, and Precious gets her fountain of ranch dressing. The wedding was a good and satisfying choice for the couple, in this case.

9 Mortgaged: Nick & Denise

"It's opening the door to the next chapter, it's giving a gift to someone else." These are the words Denise says when she and Nick choose the dream house Nichole showed them. Sarah definitely pulled some strings to make Denise and Nick's Graceland/Elvis wedding a viable option. However, Nichole won by leaving family touches all over a beautiful home, including a bedroom decorated for Nick's daughter, Tatum. In the end, Nick and Denise get the best of both worlds by eloping and using their hard-earned $25,000 for the down payment on their house. They mortgaged, and that's exactly what they should have done.

8 Married: Alex & Hayley

Alex and Hayley specifically want to live in West Nashville, but the churchgoing couple's situation is unusual. They have made the decision to wait on physical intimacy until they get married, yet they are still sharing a living space. For Alex and Hayley, living together means that someone has to go away and "crash with a friend" every night!

When the two decide to continue with this arrangement after buying a house, viewers certainly wonder why they didn't just get married instead. Hayley and Alex want to have enough space to host their Bible studies, but it seems odd and uncomfortable that one of them is forced to exit their brand new house each night. The couple should have gotten married in the first place, so it's a good thing that they got married about seven months after moving in.

7 Mortgaged: Cindy & Karla

Cindy and Karla make the decision to pursue the wedding Sarah has planned for them. Their reasons are admirable as they seek to model the power of all love. Their wedding ceremony is touching and their reception is lively, but there's one big issue. Karla and Cindy were looking into a new home to be able to leave the house Karla and her ex-wife once shared. It's special to see Pastor Cindy sitting at a desk in what could be her new home office, and the fresh start of a new space seems so right for her and Karla. They should have gone with the perfect house for them, but instead, they continued to save for their dream home after the wedding.

6 Married: Whitney & Alex

It's adorable watching Whitney and Alex tote their cat, Georgie, around in every home they visit. Nichole promises that she'll supply the bathtub of Alex's dreams, but Sarah has some tricks up her sleeve, too. The wedding planner takes Alex and Whitney to a divine dress shop, and she sets them up with a new photographer after learning they've had a bad experience with one before.

The trial photoshoot is a blast, and it's clear that the women would have a ball at their wedding. Even though they want to have a family and a house, they also deserve a special wedding day, so it's awesome that they choose that in the end.

5 Mortgaged: Scott & Brittany

Scott is in the army and is preparing for deployment, so he and Brittany are looking for a home that is close to Brittany's family. Brittany sees the importance of having a safe and stable space to live in, but she also wants a Cinderella wedding. Sarah delivers on the princess vision with a dance lesson and a sample carriage (and a Rolls Royce), but Nichole makes even more of an impression. When she has trouble satisfying all of Brittany and Scott's wish list items, Nichole shows them a property where they could build their forever home. In Marriage or Mortgaged fashion, Nichole has placed a stone in the grass with Brittany's deceased granddaddy's saying about family written on it. By the end of the episode, Scott and Brittany are already in the house they built, and they made the right decision. However, fans might like to know that they decided to squeeze in a wedding, too.

4 Married: Braxton & Emily

Braxton and Emily are each living at their parents' homes. They are trying to decide whether to purchase a home together or tie the knot first. They have some particular requests, like a high-pressure shower for Braxton to spend long amounts of time in. Nichole rises to the occasion and shows the couple some great choices. Sarah goes all out, too, from diamond rings for the bride and groom to a doughnut wall for the wedding reception. Emily and Braxton decide on a wedding at the end of the day. With the amazing discounts Sarah got them, the couple made a sound decision, although it left them residing separately for a time. They did move into an apartment together shortly after filming Marriage or Mortgage.

3 Mortgaged: Eli & Sarah

When it looks like the dream house Nichole showed Sarah and Eli is going to fall through, they are more motivated to choose marriage. As great a job as Sarah, the wedding planner, does for the young couple with a moonshine tasting, Nashville barbecue, and a helicopter ride, the wedding is not the right choice in the end.

Nichole and Sarah surprise Eli and Sarah the day after the young couple's decision on a wedding. It turns out that the dream house came through, so Sarah and Eli make a wise choice by putting their money towards that. Unfortunately, it looks as though Eli and Sarah might not be together anymore.

2 Married: Evan & Liz

Sarah wraps up the Nashville lifestyle and presents it to Liz and Evan through every aspect of wedding planning--including a stop at a food truck serving up classic Southern fare. Nichole tries to persuade them to make a sound investment in a home, thrilling Liz with a walk-in closet but also introducing the reality of extra expenses, like redoing a fence for more privacy. Liz and Evan choose their dream wedding, which was a great choice, even though the day was altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The wedding was smart in the long term because it gave Evan and Liz more time to figure out what they want in a home.

1 Mortgaged: Antonio & Raven

Antonio and Raven fell in love in college and have two young sons. The family would like to branch out of their small apartment and find a home that meets their needs. Nichole delivers on extra space, even staging a beautiful room for Raven to call her own.

Sarah ultimately wins the show by helping Antonio and Raven envision their dream wedding, and after all those years together, they decide to get married. Viewers can understand that choice, but Raven and Antonio deserve a comfortable home for their family, too. They should have chosen to mortgage, especially since they ended up putting their wedding on hold due to COVID-19.
