Despite an overall lukewarm reception to Marvel’s Avengers when it first launched last September, publisher Square Enix still promises to continue its support for the game well into 2021 – including an updated port for current-gen consoles. Several additional DLC heroes have been confirmed, from the soon-to-be-released Hawkeye to Black Panther and the PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man. There will also be new missions, story campaigns, and player skins for existing heroes - including the possibility of some stylish threads pulled straight from the silver screen.
Crystal Dynamics recently held a Twitch stream (via MP1ST) to promote Marvel’s Avengers (particularly the upcoming Hawkeye DLC) and answer fan questions about the development of the recent title this past weekend. A user named MavethTheReaper asked if there would be any DLC skins based on the MCU to coincide with upcoming movies like Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which Crystal Dynamics stated was “very possible.” Another fan named Rickeyjedi also asked about MCU skins, and the developer replied that while it couldn’t confirm anything official yet, players should “stay tuned.”
So far, Marvel’s Avengers has struggled to win over the hearts of players despite the recent success of other comic-based games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Reportedly, the game cost Square Enix millions in potential sales since its release, and a good 96% of its initial player base has since lost interest. These players have cited lackluster combat and a lack of content as reasons for this, even as some enjoyed the game’s accessibility options and story that told of the Avengers regrouping after a tragedy in San Francisco to save the world from M.O.D.O.K. and the forces of A.I.M.
Although Crystal Dynamics hasn’t officially confirmed that it will be adding MCU costumes to Marvel’s Avengers, the move could be a good way to draw in curious gamers as long as the developer doesn't charge too much for them. Fans have already compared the game's versions of the Avengers to the ones who have graced the big screen for over a decade, so the chance to take on A.I.M. as Chris Evan's Captain America or Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow in Marvel’s Avengers sounds fun – should they actually be introduced to the game in the future.
