Marvel’s Luke Cage Becomes A Cop In Heroes Reborn Universe

Warning: contains spoilers for Heroes Reborn: American Knights #1

Marvel hero Luke Cage is getting an all-new origin as New York's police commissioner. Marvel's upcoming Heroes Reborn event will see the entire world having been altered as a result of the Avengers never assembling. Many heroes' lives have been changed and remixed as a result, and Marvel's tie-in American Knights will see not only Cage's new life in the Marvel Universe but Daredevil's as well. While Luke Cage has been an Avenger himself, he's also been a member (and leader) of The Defenders and is most often fights alongside Marvel's undervalued hero, Iron Fist. However, leading New York's finest hasn't been in the cards for Luke Cage...until now.

Heroes Reborn will be coming from Avengers writer Jason Aaron with art from Ed McGuiness, though there will be several tie-in miniseries and one-shots from a variety of Marvel creatives in order to accurately show just how different the world has become without the Avengers. While the primary change will be that the Squadron Supreme of America are now Earth's Mightiest Heroes (who are secretly under the control of Phil Coulson and Mephisto), the lack of Avengers will create a butterfly effect where mutants are not as prominent, Wakanda is a myth, Peter Parker never got spider powers, and more.

However, the newly announced tie-in American Knights from writer Paul Grist with art by Christopher Allen will see Cage being put in charge of the police department by none other than the Squadron Supreme, tasked by the team of superheroes to investigate and track down any unsanctioned vigilante activity in the city. This is in stark contrast to how his character was left in Netflix's Luke Cage series, which saw him assume the role of Harlem's new crime boss. Regardless, it also looks as though Police Commissioner Cage will be going after one vigilante in particular known as the Saint who has more than a passing resemblance to Daredevil. Here's the cover art from Chris Sprouse and the official synopsis from Marvel Comics:

  • HEROES REBORN: AMERICAN KNIGHTS #1
  • (W) Paul Grist
  • (A) Christopher Allen
  • (CA) Chris Sprouse
  • Backed by the Squadron Supreme, Commissioner Cage thinks he's bulletproof. He's dead wrong, and it'll take a Saint to prove it. Someone is cleaning up criminals who've escaped justice – and leaving a bloody trail in their wake. This is the Squadron's world, and the age of vigilantes is over. Police Commissioner Luke Cage has one job: Find the scum and eliminate them – before ambition takes them beyond the city streets.

It seems as though American Knights #1 will be revisiting a lot of the same grounded and gritty themes of the 90's Marvel Knights, and the Saint Cage is after seems to be Matt Murdock's new identity in this altered reality. Instead of opting for the classic devil aesthetic, it looks as though he's simply gone in the other direction. Furthermore, the cover art sees the Squadron Supreme's Nighthawk surveying the city, with the implication being that he'll be a strong presence in American Knights as well. Considering that Nighthawk is the SSA's Batman counterpart, it seems likely that Cage will serve the role of Nighthawk's version of Commissioner Gordon from DC Comics.

In any case, seeing Luke Cage on the side of the "law" is going to be interesting. It remains to be seen whether or not Matt Murdock will motivate him to look at justice in a new light when Heroes Reborn arrives this May.
