Directors of HBO's McMillions, James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte, will tackle the Pepsi jet giveaway scandal in a new docuseries for Apple TV+. Premiering on HBO in 2020, McMillions chronicles the unbelievable events of the McDonald’s Monopoly game that occurred between 1989 and 2002. Helmed by Hernandez and Lazarte, McMillions cracked open the true crime story to unveil how the FBI discovered that a security officer was the mastermind behind the Monopoly game scheme that shook the nation. Now, the filmmakers will tackle another infamous scandal of the 90s.
Per THR, Hernandez and Lazarte will helm docuseries The Jet, which follows the events of the ‘90s Pepsi campaign that advertised a Harrier Jet as the main prize, for Apple TV+. Launching in 1996, the Pepsi Points campaign, featuring the slogan “Buy Pepsi, Get Stuff,” allowed consumers of the carbonated beverage to trade in Pepsi Points for a variety of prizes. Chaos ensued when John Leonard collected 7 million points, the amount for the jet, and Pepsi failed to deliver the prize. Diving into the ‘90s culture, The Jet will cover the court case that occurred after Leonard opted to take on Pepsi.
As it stands, Apple TV+ continues to pad its docuseries roaster, which includes Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry and Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds, with compelling subjects. Of course, a docuseries on Pepsi Points will allow viewers to dive into nostalgia while garnering a better understanding of what occurred during the court case. Indeed, the complex rise and fall of the Pepsi Points program is an ideal subject matter for the McMillions filmmakers to tackle and certainly offers a lot for viewers to unpack in the upcoming docuseries The Jet.
