The latest in Call of Duty: Warzone news is that the zombie infestation is expected to reach as far as the Superstore area soon. While the presence of zombies has been a Call of Duty staple for about 13 years, the implementation of the battle royale model meant that their ensuing gameplay style had to be tweaked. Instead of the traditional model consisting of multiple rounds during which players can team up to see how many zombies they can eliminate, Warzone’s zombies arrived in Verdansk via a ship that slowly approached until it crashed into the area now known as Shipwreck.
Since then, the areas in which zombies are present are marked with a red strikethrough on the map. In these areas, players can play through the Battle Royale or Plunder game modes as usual, but with the added peril of dealing with waves of zombies in addition to the enemy players. These zombies come in multiple waves and grant players a keycard once enough of them have been killed. The keycards then open bunkers and other secret areas around the map, which many believe will be ground zero for a large-scale nuke event that Activision has been teasing for a few months.
The hint about the zombies’ was reported by GameSpot, which cites a care package Activision sent to CharlieIntel. The package consists of a supermarket bag, a name tag, and a Warzone card. Previously, Activision has sent out care packages consisting of jumpsuits to hint that the zombies would be moving to the Prison and hospital scrubs to show that they were moving to the Hospital area. If this trend is to be followed, it would appear that the zombies are moving north through the map and may possibly end in the Dam or Military Base areas. As for the ultimate goal of the zombie event, no one has been able to make more than educated guesses.
What makes the Superstore area filled with zombies a particularly harrowing thought is how busy that area of the map gets. Starting at the beginning of each game, the roof of the Superstore is among the most frantic locations to drop. Even once dominance over the Superstore roof has been established, chaos tends to erupt constantly inside the store itself. The inside of the Superstore is essentially the Atlas Superstore map from Modern Warfare, and it’s infamous among players for being full of corners, ledges to hide in, and plenty of loot to make it a prime destination. With zombies thrown into the mix, it’s sure to be absolutely ridiculous.
In terms of the conclusion of the zombie event, the most popular theory thus far is that it will culminate with a large-scale nuke event that many have been anticipating for quite a while. Activision has seemingly endorsed this theory by placing bunkers and unused warheads throughout the map, but no official word has been given as to when, or if, it will happen. However, recent news has suggested that there will soon be a new Warzone map, and although the idea of an 80s-themed Verdansk hasn’t thrilled many Warzone fans, a nuke event would be a great way to retire Verdansk as it now exists. The question that remains now is whether the zombie outbreak will be the catalyst for it.
